Have you ever lost a sock to the inside part of the washer

I just took clothes out of the dryer and onevsock is missing. My daughter was here and she said that the washer apparently ate it. I have checked everywhere (it’s a slow day for me). I thought it had gotten mixed up with other things in drawers. Anyway just curious if the washer possibility had happened to anyone else. I am focusing on this today instead of the much more important issues out there 😀We had a virtual teaching morning which is always hard. Sock hunting is a good diversion. Thanks for letting me ramble on.

Maybe it's stuck to a towel. I don't know why that image came into my head.

I am convinced that my house has a ghost. Every now and then I have something completely disappear. I'm not talking something I haven't seen for ages but a couple of times it was something I just had IN MY HAND! Then it was gone. A couple of those things were never again to be seen.

My ghost seems to just like messing with me from time to time.

Maybe you have one, too.

@gellen Yes I have. When my husband was alive more than once my baby's sock floated up over the spinning basket.

I remember it/them because he had to take part of the washer apart to get to it because it can block the water draining out of the hose.

You should keep an eye on the washer and don't run it while you are gone.

Your post made me laugh, enjoyable ha! And yes, yesterday. Not much else was in the load except some small hand towels and sheets which are back on the bed. I checked them carefully but I may find a lump in bed at some point lol.

Years ago, DH stuffed too many of his gym clothes at once in our top-loading machine.

Soon after that, it needed a repairman. He found a sock that had worked its way into the space between the spinning tub and washer wall.

Missing socks often stick from static electricity to other items in a dryer, but washers occasionally really do "eat socks ".

It's not a myth. Cost us just under $100 to fix the machine. Turned out to be one very expensive sock.

When I "lose " a sock....it shows up EVENTUALLY. Stuck to a towel....of inside a pillow case. Never fails

Many years ago my mother had a repairman come because her washing machine wasn't working. It turned out that a pair of panties had gotten stuck somewhere she couldn't see. The repairman said "Boy lady -- that must have been some party!" Let's just say that my mother did not find that remark particularly funny!! 😂

Or, it could have slid into another dimension where it's there, but you just can't see it. Like your keys do sometimes. My phone is tricky like that.

YES .... and I once read the explanation from some expert and it made a lot of sense.

Most people wash their socks loose with everything else. When the spin cycle begins, all the clothing spins around as the wash water is drained. Lone socks are pressed as they go around and often elongate (think of a long, skinny cloth worm) and spin like mad, often going out the pipe with the water. Gone forever.

Solutions? Either tie socks together so the knot is too large to go out the pipe .... or throw matched pairs loose in a mesh laundry bag. They will wash in the cycle, but can't get out of the mesh bag, so they never escape.

Works every time.

I remember reading this explanation and thinking how obvious .... I now use mesh bags for socks and have never lost another one.

In my dresser drawer is an assortment of socks with no "buddy". I expect that one of these days their other half will show up somewhere or other. Although some have been gone for a very long time and should probably be given up on.

But it's never the old ones with the heels and toes thinned out that disappear, it's always the nice newer ones.

This has happened once or twice in my life, the sock was found years later, when the machine broke down, and the repairman found a lone sock behind the barrel (it was not the cause of the breakdown).

Generally I find the missing sock under the bed or caught up in another item of clothing.

For me it's the static socks in the dryer. They stick to the sides of the dryer drum and usually at the top where I don't expect to find them.

No not since I have always found them. LOL!!!

I have found them in the trash can, beside the washer, stuck on ledge things around inside dryer drum & inside pant leg or shirt sleeves. Find them in odd places when one gets in a load with other clothes.

We do have a ghost?

We found 2 screws in the dining room. One was sitting under the chair upright. No way would that land like that if you dropped it. Someone had to put it there. There was another screw on the dining room table sitting upright.

DH put his refrigerator he keeps on the patio in our dining room during our cold temperatures.

When he puts it back outside this weekend he will check to see if the screws are from the underneath side?

We have no idea where they came from.

There have been other things that happen over the years which there is no other answer.

I was in a hotel once walking to the elevator, and an underpants fell out of my pant leg! I don't know how I didn't feel that when I put them on.

One time I went to work wearing slacks and someone came up to me and said I had something sticking out of one leg of my slacks. Lo and behold it was a sock that got stuck (static cling) inside the slacks which I didn’t notice when putting them on. Kind of embarrassing.

At our house we have a simple way to solve the lone sock problem. Always keep a pincushion, full of large safety pins. Next to laundry hamper. Rule is to pin pair of socks together before dropping in the laundry. Sometimes the best solutions are that simple. And I read that solution many years ago. Who would have guessed?
