NASA Perseverance Rover is Landing on Mars Right Now

"Nearly seven months after its takeoff to Mars, the NASA Perseverance rover is expected to land at the Red Planet’s Jezero Crater on February 18. If successful, Perseverance will be the fifth NASA rover ever to touch down on Mars after Sojourner, twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity and Curiosity. After landing, Perseverance will spend the coming years scouring for signs of ancient microbial life in a historic mission that will bring back samples from Mars to Earth and prepare the way for future human visitors."

That was awesome - and right on schedule. I watched on NASA TV. When they announced "touch down confirmed," I had goosebumps.

The rover carries a commemorative plate to honor COVID-19 healthcare workers and "pay tribute to the impact of the pandemic."

It also carries the names of 10.9 million people on three microchips. I guess all they had to do was ask.

I just finished watching the 2-hour lead up and touchdown on youtube. It was awe-inspiring and I got a bit choked up. I think I might have liked to work in the NASA Mission Control Center to be a part of that.
