SELF-PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST IN A GREEN BUGATTI

I've only seen a few of the more famous pieces by Tamara de Lempicka, but for some reason, never this one. Was browsing Art.com and this Art Deco image really struck me. The Roaring (19) Twenties look pretty glamorous, at least in this self-portrait that Tamara de Lempicka did in 1929.

Wouldn't it be fun to have this hanging, as a companion piece, with this aristocratic gent that she also did, "Portrait du Marquis d'Afflito" --

What a moody pair!

i really enjoy art deco art, furniture, and jewelry, but i am not a fan of these pieces. they almost have a look to them like their eyes are following me. i can only imagine what they would be like hanging on a wall. lol

Nah. Cold, dead, fish eyes. Not my style.

I like moody and mysterious sometimes, but not like that.

BTW, that artist was LGBTQ, had countless lovers of all types, and was Jewsh by ancestry. So eventually even she had to flee for her life from the fascists, even though the fascist elites loved her work and enjoyed her aesthetic.

Looks like they had words, she leaves and he is despondent. I like them and I am usually not an art deco fan but art can transcend styles as these do for me.

Not a big art deco fan but I love the venetian mirrors and just a pop here and there. I have Venetian mirrors in my bathroom over the lava bowls. It's just enough to make me happy and to transition a little from my very traditional bedroom to the more spa-like bathroom without having the ultramodern spa mirrors.

I know that you love to romanticize the past and see it through rose colored glasses, but the "roaring 20's" wasn't a big glamorous party for everyone.

If you are going to live in the past, then look at it honestly.

Life was awful if you were poor, or black, or LGBTQ, or a woman.

A woman had little recourse if her husband beat her.

It wasn't safe to be openly gay.

There was rampant racism.

If you are going to mention the good, then it is only right and fair to also acknowledge the bad too, because it too existed.

And to ignore that reality for a lot of people, is to be in denial.

Hello, @Anonymous032819 . I'm afraid I don't agree at all that I like to romanticize the past or see it through rose colored glasses. As a student of history (albeit one who is always learning) I'm fairly cognizant that there are nuances, layers, tragedy and forward strides, in any given decade or era.

Sometimes, art pieces can simply be enjoyed for a simple slice of what they portray about a time, or a person. Here, I am struck by how the aesthetics of the two works, captured that quintessential Twenties "dash", but of course the underlying melancholy as well. Under all the frenetic activity-- the "Roar", and the wild excess of the era, was the lingering knowledge of what World War I, the "Great War" had wrought, so very recently. That generation was profoundly affected by that huge conflict. Hemingway's early novels are also haunted by it.

That there was loss and torment underneath doesn't somehow negate the feverish dash after pleasure and explosion of high living that characterized the Twenties-- it helps explain it, in fact.

Keeping it pretty minimal. Parted with quite a bit of art that couldn't be restored, but kept a few pieces...

I had "Pearl" -- the print I'd posted -- for over 35 years. At least I can still look at it online...

@Oznell Art should just be looked at and enjoyed- some you like some you do not- just stand or sit and enjoy what the piece you are looking at tells you.

I love looking at art and the pieces in this thread would not be my choice to hang on my walls but I do appreciate them and love the period they are depicting. Thank you for sharing.

@dulwich, I rather agree about not necessarily wanting these on my own personal walls that I'd look at every single day-- I love the idea of seeing them, grouped together, somewhere!

The closest I've gotten recently, is, as I've mentioned before, I antiqued an oversize, vintage black and white framed print of early, early Bette Davis, so early she's a platinum blonde-- made up to the nines, and staring down the camera with Art Deco insouciance.... It's in my living room on my desk, leaning against the wall. It's replacing a nice but rather inocuous pheasant print I had there before....

I appreciate the Art Deco style and love the two portraits, yes, I would very much like to have both hanging on my living room wall!!!! They are spectacular and pleasing to my eye. I love creativity, art, writing, music, sculpture, crafts all of it!

My favorite art period is the Pre-Rhaphaelite. Waterhouse is my favorite of the artists of that time. I am not an expert in this field but admire the paintings that came out of it.
