I dealt with this about 17-18 years ago and fixed it myself. It's been fine ever since. Man, the pain! It was awful.

Anyway, one of the things to do is GENTLE stretches. Before getting out of bed I would sit up with my legs out in front of me and, GENTLY, stretch my ankles. Do some reps of that.

During the day I would do another kind of stretch where you stand on a step or curb with your heels hanging off and very GENTLY lower the heels to get a stretch. Some reps of that.

With stretches it should always be done very gently, but they are very important.

One other thing was not walking around barefoot for a while. Wearing shoes that support well makes all the difference toward fixing this. I wear Birkenstocks a lot and that was an excellent choice for me.

This wasn't my situation but, if one is overweight, losing weight will help a lot. Also, if it is at all possible, not being on your feet as much. I was working on my feet a lot back then but I just tried to lighten up on that a bit while I was treating myself for the problem.

I learned this stuff from Googling and just paying attention to what seemed like good ideas, physically.

It was so awful. I remember coming home from work and, literally, climbing up the stairs in my house on my hands and knees.

I don't recall, at this point, how long it took but I made it go away and haven't even had a twinge of it all these years since. I also continue doing some degree of stretches each day. I think, as I've gotten older, that stretches and drinking water are two of the most important things.

Dont suffer...go to a podiatrist..I had outbreaks thru the years...they will build you a heal cup insert...and if really bad can get a shot to ease inflamiation.

Of course depends on your severity of growth....surgery may be called for

BUT LIKE ALL ILLNESSES....donot IGNORE...that never works...

Years ago, I had spurs from a PT job where I was on my feet for hours at a time. My Dr. suggested getting some Spenco inserts specifically for heel spurs. They gently tip your heel to take pressure off the spur. They worked for me and over a few months the spur didn't bother me anymore and eventually I didn't need the inserts anymore either. I don't know if the bone spur broke off or if it wasn't a very serious case but the inserts worked for me. Worth a try before considering something more invasive. Good luck with it!

We have a foot and ankle clinic at the hospital I work for so I see a lot of the clinical notes when the docs need insurance authorization for something. As far as I know, they never go away but the pain can go away. Of course there is surgery but patients can get relief from the pain from orthotics, special shoes, stretching exersizes, cryo therapy and cortisone injections.

Both my mom and I suffered from this. For some reason, it went away for both of us. I had a friend who had surgery and she said never again. It didn't help her. Bottom line, I don't think there is one magic solution; I'd be very careful about surgery and unless you have exhausted all remedies would I even consider surgery. Both my mom and I wore KURU shoes; they are awesome and without a doubt enabled correcting this painful situation!

Its a come and go thing. I really don't have a lot of faith in podiatric surgeries, or some of their other gimmicks. Maybe an orthopedic surgeon does differently.
