A new boy (to me)

He has already lost his antlers and I'm worried they were taken before they fell off. It is almost time for shed, but you usually see bucks lose one at a time. His face and head are pretty white, so I've named him Herzog (after Whitey Herzog, long time manager of my St Louis Cardinals).

I think he's an old man like Harley (who hasn't been around lately)

It's an honor to meet Herzog! What a handsome buck he is! I do hope he is OK after losing his antlers and that it was nature's way. I know he is a lucky guy to have found the Wick's haven and feeding post! The sign says all are welcome, whether it be regulars or new visitors!

I'm making beef stew today and I'm low on carrots. Darn, I wish I were your neighbor. If the antlers didn't fall off naturally, do people remove them or they lose them in a fight. Nice to have a new face and he is a handsome buck. Thanks for the pics.

I love the markings around Herzog's mouth. They remind me of the plasti piece I put in my mask!! He is a very handsome young buck.

Thank you for the photos. Hertzog does appear a bit miffed in the first photo. I would be too if someone stole

my antlers! Hopefully, that didn’t happen.

@MamaWick A hearty welcome to Herzog! Those grey muzzles and faces of all animals have special a place in my heart. The stories I'm sure Herzog could tell.

@goldensrbest I'm going to put my answer in a spoiler box in case there is anyone who really doesn't want to know.

There are those who want trophies. They will bait the animal and trap him in order to remove the antlers. Bucks will eventually shed the antlers, but if they are removed prematurely, it is traumatic.

@MamaWick As much as i would like some antlers, i would never do that,just terrible, i am scared to go out into the woods here by myself, to find them, feel soory for deer that gets treated that way ,beautiful creatures.

There is no reason that someone should "take" what is not theirs.

I want to believe gorgeous ol boy Herzog lost his antlers one at a time (but) you just don't know it....lemme think it, the alternative hurts my heart too much.

He is so cute. they are all beautiful and well cared for - an amazing thing, considering they are wild.

Even poachers in WV have standards and this little boy ain't big enough to have had a rack worth taking. He is barely big enough to consider edible. Poachers here want the meat first, the rack is an added bonus.

I think this male was in a fight, and run out of another herd, and is trying to join this one. He looks different, and may have a hard time being accepted in any herd with multiple males. All deer, male and female, establish themselves in the herd, and this guy will likely be in the lowest pecking order of all. The pictures we've seen in the past of does standing on their hind legs are evidence of the females establishing their dominance and position in the herd.

@goldensrbest, Deer horns should be handled very carefully by gloved hands, due to bacteria. A former co-worker found a large trophy worthy rack while hunting and carried it out of the woods to take home. At some point, he punctured his hand with one of the points. Within 24 hours, he was in the hospital fighting a septic infection that affected his kidneys and almost killed him.
