Toss Or Keep

I decided to post here because I thought it would get the most attention. I went food shopping Saturday morning in Valley Stream, NY. I accidentally left the eggs in the trunk, I took them out today at around noon. The temperature was between 32-39 degrees. Should I toss the eggs or do you think they are fine to eat? I'm wondering if it's not worth the risk.

I'm sure they are fine. The average temp for home refrig is 40 degrees. Google is a great resource. Some people leave their eggs on the kitchen counter, no refrigeration: i.e. Martha Stewart.

@Jordan2. They will be fine to eat, do not toss. I've noticed in Great Britain kitchens they keep eggs on the kitchen counters in cute, innovative containers. I recently left a bag with my eggs in the garage for 2 days. They were fine. Eggs in the shell are not very fragile.

I would definitely keep. Some people say eggs don't even need to be refrigerated. Not sure I agree with that, but with the temperature in the 30's the eggs should be fine.

I live in Oceanside NY. Definetly cold enough overnight that your eggs should be good. Enjoy them!

Crack one - pour in small bowl - does the yolk look perky & good color.?

If not - crack the rest for the garbage disposal.....................

I was surprised, many years ago, to find that some people in England keep their eggs out on the counter at room temperature. And these were contemporary houses with central heating, not pre-war housing. I would not be comfortable doing that, but it does seem to indicate that eggs are fairly sturdy. Presumably a car trunk in the winter is much cooler than a centrally heated kitchen.

If I suspect an egg might be "bad," I place it in a bowl of water.

If it floats, it's bad.

Many other countries do not keep their eggs in the fridge. I agree to break one open and see if they possibly got too cold and froze over night, in which case I would toss them all.

Freshly laid eggs have a protective coating on them. Once that coating is washed off - as in the U.S. - they must be refrigerated.

In the UK and Ireland they don't wash them so they can leave them out on the counter.

If eggs sink to the bottom of a bowl of cold water they are fine, if they float toss them

Funny that two of you mentioned testing the egg in water. I did that, the egg sank like a stone! When I'm ready to eat one, I'll crack it open and give it a look and whiff.

Keep! I leave eggs out over night on the counter all the time to get them to room temp before hard boiling. They do not go bad that fast.

3. Eggs

Eggs are something I always have on hand, but rarely keep track of how long they have been in the fridge. Living alone means I only use one or two eggs at a time unless I'm cooking for someone else too, so they can sit in the fridge for a while. Luckily, eggs can last nearly 70 days if properly refrigerated. That's typically three to four weeks beyond the expiration date.

At Aldi eggs only cost about .69 a dozen. I would buy new!

@Jordan2 - My first inclination was to agree with everyone else here. But if the temperature went down overnight, and there was a chance they froze, I would probably toss them.

I'm still living, I just checked my egg carton this morning since I have been keeping them in stock, and I was working out of the carton that expired three weeks ago, LOL. They are fine.

After seeing eggs on the shelf without refrigeration in Europe I checked recently and the message is no they don't require refrigeration, but they last longer if you do. So a day not refrigerated is no big deal.

Eggs are relatively inexpensive - I would toss. I once accidentally left strawberries in the trunk overnight and they were not pretty the next day. I don’t know where you keep your car and how cold it actually gets in your trunk, but they were in the dark (and possibly moist) trunk for days and I wouldn’t personally risk it after my own unintended science experiment.
