.....So, Long Story Short.....

Have you ever noticed that when someone is telling a story, and it goes on and on and on, they will say, "So, long story short...." ?

In my head I think, "Too late!" .

Then the story continues for another five minutes!

@Anonymous032819 My husband will start a story and he goes off the deep end. He starts at the very beginning but as soon as his lips start moving, he gets sidetracked and then every little detail and every little piece of information not necessary to the story starts and I have learned to stop him well before he gets too involved (like 1 minute or less) and say "let's fast forward to the END of the story," or if I let him go on and on I'll say "is there a point to this story?"

I can so relate! I have a dear friend who does exactly that!!!!!!!! And fairly often also! Luckily, she's a dear, dear, dear person!

I have a Cousin that I talk to that does this... I could probably put the phone down and walk away and make dinner and she wouldn't even notice.

Oh dear....I knew a man who did the same thing! He would be conveying a simple story, like "I saw a deer next to the mailbox today ".....and it would take him 15 minutes to get to that punch line!

At parties people would try not to sit by him, it was so bad.

He was a very nice person and his wife was a good friend, so I just went along with it! But she did the same thing as another poster mentioned...would say something like, "And what happened at the end?" to move things along.

My DH is an engineer and a very 'tech' kinda guy, so the simplest question can end up being a lesson in quantum psychics.

After 25 years together, I just kinda let my eyes glaze over during his dissertation and when he's done, I say "So was that a yes or a no?"

I actually do put the phone down on my dear friend, just now and again get back on and add a quick hmmm. You are right, she doesn't even notice I'm not there. I have got caught a few times when she says "I told you that." Of course that was probably when I had put the phone down.

LOL...Funny thread!

I have a dear nephew who lives in the Midwest and I'm in the Northeast...We keep in touch often and he loves to talk...Once I've said "Hi"...that's about it for me...He just takes off and starts talking...from one subject to another...barely comes up for air...I try to get a few words in here and there but he will usually say..."hold on, I just want to finish what I was saying"...LOL

I have been known to just put the phone down and head into the kitchen and get myself a glass of wine...put a load of laundry in the washer...and when I get back to the phone...he is still carrying on the conversation...never knowing that I wasn't on the other end and took a little break. LOL

He is the sweetest and most caring guy and I love him to death...I always have to finally end the conversation so I get to say "Okay, I have to go now"...I get the salutation and the closing parts of the conversation.

LOL....Yes, I've know people that do that. Something similar that irritates me more is when somebody will say, for example.....OHMYGOODNESS, did you hear about your Aunt Esther and then proceeds to tell me but gets lost in side story A, then side story B then side story C and on and on before I ever hear what happened to Aunt Esther . I'm to the point now where once a person starts on side story A or B, I cut them off and tell them to just tell me what happened to Aunt Esther.

@KingstonsMom, I have to laugh here because although I am not an engineer and know absolutely nothing about engineering, I do that with nursing! I know, I know....that is difficult to believe (especially with my posts here). lol

Yesterday I was talking with one of my former nursing friends and had her on speaker phone while I was in the kitchen baking some cookies. Later my husband asked, just curious but how did you and xyz know they are using TB syringes for the vaccine. Well, I proceeded to give a long complex answer to which he just responded "sorry I asked". LOL!

I’ve learned never to ask a question about a strategy in any football game dh is watching. His response is always so long and detailed that my mind drifts off. I miss the answer and as soon as he stops to take a breath, I catapult off the couch, claim some lame excuse and bolt from the room. 😆
