Annabelle and Ford-Thank you. Love checking back into this thread and finding more replies and opinions.

Ford--Is there a cookbook or manual or something *other* than fiction you would like?

Annabelle-I can't imagine that ""real"" books would ever completely go away. At least I hope not. It is a scary thought.

Hi Everyone,

I am an avid reader and have been my entire life. In fact, I find that each year that I get older I am reading more than ever. I am a big BOOK lover; I love the feel, smell, etc., of a new book, hardback or paperback, big or small. My son has a Kindle, and many of my friends do, including my BFF-who primarily got her Kindle b/c of her small house with limited space. Now, she cannot imagine her life without it.

I have a bunch of books "on-deck", and a few that I've meant to read, but haven't yet. They are all stored in a spare bedroom, on shelves. And boy, do I have a lot of them. I realize that I could cut WAY down on clutter and just be WAY more economical if, at some point, I transition to the Kindle. But there is something holding me back. It's not the $$--especially now that the Kindle is at a fairly decent price point. I think it's really that I think I will miss holding a real book in my hands.

Can anyone share their experience transitioning to using a Kindle? Did you think you would hate it and ended up loving it? Do you miss "real books"?

Anyone?

TIA

I just had this conversation with a friend.. She like to do the ""out down"" because I use a nook.. Goes on and on about the ""feel"" of a real book.. Well I listened long enough and finally I said to her -""to me it is more about the story than the method of how I got it""...

I have re-discovered how much I love reading in the last few months.. I think the e-readers are great. but there is nothing wrong with a good old book-- I just don't like the ""closed minded attitude"".

I have almost totally converted to an e-reader. I wasn't sure at first, but the more I learned how to navigate my Kindles the better I liked them. I have the most basic Kindle and the most basic Kindle Fire. I love them both. I get all my books for my Kindles free from the library. I like that my basic Kindle has page numbers (for the most part) and my Kindle Fire allows both Kindle books and ePub books (which show number of pages in each chapter).

For reading away from home I usually just take my basic Kindle. It's so much lighter and I love the fact that I can turn the page from either side of the device. The battery lasts so much longer, too.

The only down side is that most new books aren't available through my digital library and I usually get those from the real library. I have a problem with my eyes so I always look for books in large print, if available. That's another reason I love my Kindles. I can change the font to suit my eyes. With ePub books there are even more options to choose from, such as the font style and margin size.

I love having a Kindle. You can take multiple books with you when you travel. So much nicer than lugging a real book (or books) around.

Thanks, best buddy & smokymtn, for continuing this thread. I think I will get a Kindle sometime in the next few months--I have a bunch of books "on deck"-actual books. And I want to plow thru them over the next few months. I think even if I got a kindle just for travel or vacation, it would be worth it.

It took me a while to fully learn how to navigate on the kindle (not that it's rocket science), but now I prefer it to a real book. There are so many choices, though. The hardest part will be trying to decide which kindle to get.

I have to confess something I did when I was new to the kindle. Sometimes I would take a book out of the library and then also request it through my digital library. That way I could compare the real book to the kindle version. Don't ask me why I did that. Just because I didn't totally trust the kindle version, I guess.

I was a hold out and had my Fire almost a year before I broke the seal on the ebook part.Well after that I never looked back!!! It's just so easy to get any book....in seconds. It's nice to not have to prop the book open a ,or up,or find my place.I love that I can try a free sample before I buy a book.A definition is only a touch away. The book deals are fun too.I love to make a cup of tea first think every morning and check the kindle daily deals.Sometimes it's a"meh";but sometimes it's a good selection. I was going to order a paperwhite;but read there is supposed to be a new model out soon. Anyone heard about this?? Aher thing is it saves so much space in my home.Dusting books is not fun and kindle books are dust free. It's easy to take my whole library anywhere.

Forgot to mention the ability to change font size...the plusses just keep coming to mind.lol.

One of the best things going is the Whispersync where I can read and listen and switch back and forth. Also, I can read something on one device and sync it on to another when I'm somewhere else. I much prefer it. In fact, I have a big hardback book that I bought and haven't read it yet. I want to buy the Kindle form even though I have the actual book. That's how much I love it.

This is a good endorsement, Mima.

Let me assure you, gimama....you will not miss holding a real book. Having a kindle and being able to peruse amazon is like being in a huge candy store, only this 'candy', (books) has no calories. I could do without my tv or radio, but I'll never part with my kindle. I have a kindle touch (with ads) that I've had for a few years now. I was worried about the ads bothering me, but they're not a problem at all.

Hi Tyak-Thank you. I have been a long-time Amazon shopper. And my older son already has one that we got for me a few years ago. I guess it's the older-style (meaning, NOT touch-screen). If I DO get one I'll probably purchase the PaperWhite. Whatever the current, basic version is. I don't need the other iPad-type functions. But yes, Amazon to me is already a place that I peruse almost daily and purchase from frequently, so I guess I will really be that kid in a candy store when/if I get one!

I was one of those doubters! I love to read more than anything and swore for several years that I could not and would not give up the feeling of a real book in my hands. My husband tho, as usual, did not listen and got me a Kindle for Christmas one year ago. I LOVE it!!!!! I still do read a real book at times, but I find myself reading many more on the Kindle. Its just so convenient and definately keeps my home more clutter free. : )

I think you should at least give it a try, it does not mean that you can never read a real book again, its just an added way to do what you love. ; ) Just wondering if anyone gets Kindle wrists now and then tho....I find my arm that I hold the Kindle in one handed is starting to feel sore now and then, like when I read for too long at a stretch. Kind of like carpal tunnel, only not. ; ) Not bad enough to give up the Kindle...just curious.
