"Ave Maria" Schubert or Bach/Gounod?

Our family goes through this debate every Christmas. We all agree the Pavarotti versions of both are the best. But which version do you prefer?

All the way with Gounod here. No vocals, straight orchestra. One of my most favorite of all. Maybe my most fav.

Without a doubt the Pavarotti version of this song is powerful and beautiful. However, when I hear anyone sing the Ave Maria I am affected.. This song was sang at so many funeral masses I attended and that was when my emotions brought me to tears.

Schubert is my favorite. My mother was a talented muscian and my brother had a magnificent voice. I have so many wonderful memories of my brother singing the Schubert version of "Ave Maria."

I love them both ...probably would pick the Schubert as my favorite. Always brings a lump to my throat...so very beautiful.

Schubert for me. So many memories associated with that version and brings me to tears every time I hear it.

Probably Gounod/Bach because I don't care for the vocals. It takes away from the piece.

@PA Mom-mom I know that. I studied piano for 12 years with a teacher who held a Masters from Northwestern and also studied at Julliard. I considered a music degree--but took another route. I know about composers.

GenXmuse, how can you dislike the lyrics? The whole song is the Latin interpretation of the "Hail Mary" prayer. The lyrics are vital!

I prefer the Gounod. That said there are some beautiful renditions of both Ave Marias on recording ranging from classical vocal masters such as Marian Anderson and Pavarotti to contemporary music artists. One of my personal favorites is the Andy Williams rendition. Aretha Franklin does a version that can make you tingle all over.
