"Creepy and poor parenting. If parents can't keep their children in line without bringing in a creepy thing and then lying to them about being spyed upon they are in desperate need of parenting classes."

"I hate the elf and the message behind it. I don't believe in bribing kids to be "good" to get stuff. You do the right thing not for a reward but because it's the right thing to do.

I think a lot of parents do it to show off on social media the clever positions they've come up with."

i think this guy is creepy....my son has a train around his christmas tree....he sent me a picture of their elf laying across the train track! so funny!!

Like pretty much everything that started out for kids, adults have co-opted the Elf, mostly for humorous social media posts. I think that's actually a better use of the Elf.

I remember the elf on my grandmothers tree. I think maybe it skipped my generation and now he's baaack.

The 'Elf on the shelf' thing must've emerged after my 1 child was a youngster, we had not even heard of it when she was young.

I have seen some pics online this year where people displayed them in clamp type glass jars with a mask on, creating their own Covid 'bubble'.

The Elf wasn't invented by the elf on the shelf people I HAVE an elf that my mother used to put on the tree ( to fill up any large bare spot) there usually could be found on any real tree when I was growing up.

@dulwichI am not sure of all the intracasies of The Elf on the Shelf cult but from what I can figure The "Elf" is a watcher for Santa. He or She reports back to the north pole every night on the naughty or nice goings on in their family's household. So they'd better be nice. You knew the Elf had gone and come back because it appears to have moved to a different vantage point every day. No one is allowed to touch the Elf or it's magic is gone. Not sure how they get around that if it falls by itself. It does seem though that the elf situation has mutated into some elves being mischevious and pulling pranks. I myself don't like the idea of the spying elf, I REALLY don't like the mschevious elf idea. Santa knows anyway. I wonder what the big guy does with a Naughty Elf?

eta Elves are Magic. They do Not contract or transmit ANY malady.

I don't like the idea of it. Hiding, spying, snitching doesn't seem very Christmasy to me. My niece is 7 and whe had one last year but we took the negative out of it. Beginning a week before Christmas, we hide him around the house and she has fun looking for him.

My children ere born in the "80's and I wasn't aware of the Elf. Fast forward to my granddaughter who is in 3rd grade and she loves him. He only does "nice" things - no potty humor etc. I am not a huge fan but she gets a lot of joy from him so what the heck!

I don't say this as a criticism, just an observation.

It's just another gimmick taking away from the reason for the season.

I didn't do it for my kids & they don't do it for their kids.

My grandkids have loved it! They look forward to the elf hunt each morning.

They also have a religious Advent calendar. Not creepy at all to me...harmless fun.

I think it's a cute idea. He/she helps to keep the magic alive. Kids grow up so fast today; nothing wrong with believing that the elf appears.

I love some of the names the little ones come up with. I also appreciate how creative the parents are. Yes, I know many find it a pain, but, think of the memories.

And, yes, this year every elf I know of is in quarantine for 14 days!!!

I love the idea but not when the parent uses it in a negative way about their behavior.😡
