FINALLY MADE THE DECISION TO SWITCH OUT THE

queen size bed in our guest room to a sleeper sofa. It only gets used a couple weeks a year at the most. I want that area back!! LOL I am not used to having so little room in a home. I love it when it comes time to clean it though LOL. Anyway, there are two choices for the sofa I have picked out. One is a memory gel foam and what is a Serta. I laid on both and the foam one is much more comfortable and $200 more. I don't care about that, because I want my daughter and sister to be comfortable when they come.

My question is that the sales rep said people buy the less expensive one and then buy a topper that costs less than $200. I am not sure if it is worth the hassle.

Do any of you have sleeper sofas and what type mattress is on yours? What sort of feedback did you get from your guests?

how about just getting a sofa and a blow up mattress, I would sooner sleep on one of those than a sleeper sofa, they are really uncomfortable.

If it were me I would just go with the more expensive one. By the time you run around trying to find a suitable topper (that you have no way of knowing if it will be comfortable enough) and you spend the money for it, how much are you really saving in the long run?

I just gave away the bed in my spare room. It hasn't been used in years so why take up the space. I have a very comfortable couch if needed.

I've been taking care of my 88 yr old dad and disabled sister (she lives with Dad). When he can no longer stay in his home, my sister will come live with me. I emptied the other bedroom and will paint soon so it's ready when she needs it.

One more thing I forgot to say before but if you ever want to move a sleeper sofa they about twice as heavy as a regular sofa so they kind of stuck where they put them

I have to agree with this...some of those inflatable mattresses can be very comfortable...much more so than a sofa bed.

What someone said about uncomfortable sofa sleepers, in my opinion is wrong, in this day and age. My son has a studio apartment, he has the brand American Leather. This company does not only sell leather sofa sleepers, it's just the company's name. It is ranked as one of the most comfortable sleepers out there. They look great have an array of mattresses and they sleep comfortably. My son is on it every night. Check it out. But whatever you do, buy the best mattress possible. You must take your guests' comfort serious. Even if it's one night. I wouldn't buy a topper,knowing the mattress is already inferior.
P.S. Don't forget the Seinfeld episode, where Elaine slept on the sofa sleeper. 😝

Go for the better mattress and no topper. You'll probably never have to replace it.

Toppers can be annoying if they shift, and they do shift.

@tends2dogs I purchased a fairly expensive sleeper sofa for my guest room a couple years ago. It is only for the grandkids who are very young. I didn't get an additional topper. All I cared about was a "waterproof" mattress cover since accidents occasionally happen. Kids always say they are cozy in the bed...so everyone is happy.

@jackthebear They can also get stuck in the hallway at midnight as well. And they can be sold with the house. Don't ask me how I know.

I suggest going with the better mattress and no topper. Also I have one of those inflatable mattresses. When I had surgery a couple years ago, had to have someone with me overnight for 8 days. I bought a good, quality, inflatable bed. It didn't work out well and the people who slept on it said it wasn't all that great.

I had a Lazy Boy sleeper sofa. Cost a pretty penny. When we purchased it, the salesman didn't mention there were different types of mattresses that came with it. It wasn't very comfortable. I ended up using a matress topper.

I agree with some of the other posters. If you only use it a couple of times a year I would go with the regular non-sleeper and quality air mattress. I could never move the sleeper sofa and it was a pain. While I have one guest room set up with traditional bedroom set I keep two air beds for extra company. There is a difference between air beds! No one has ever complalined...they keep coming back!

If only one person at a time will be sleeping on the sofa, I would consider a loveseat rather than full size sofa. And consider an ottoman to store the extra sheets, pillows, and blankets. Get a style that is comfortable. Forget a mattress topper. Where would you store it when the bed is not in use? And how much of a pain will it be to fold or roll up?

Have you thought about day beds instead of a sleep sofa? There are some very pretty ones out there and since they often use an acutal mattress, are quite comfortable, but can also take the place of a seating piece. Some of them also come with a trundle feature.

@CalminHeart ....BLESS YOUR HEART!!! I took care of my mom for about 10 years and was blessed to be able to retire early so that it worked out that I could. You are a wonderful daughter and sister and I know you are loved very much by them.

My sleeper sofa is from Castro Convertibles! I think in the 25 years I've had it, it's only been used a few times.

Usually an overnight stay because we were leaving for someplace early in the morning, and it was more convenient to leave from here.

Whatever mattress came on the sofa ... that's what I got. Nothing special.

BUT - I use toppers on the mattress on my bed. They don't make mattresses soft enough for me - so there are multiple toppers on the bed.

Also if there is a topper, would you have to take it off and store it when it comes time to close it up for the day?
