Vegans, Beware the Dryer Sheets

The radio station I listen to in the car does a random facts of the day every morning and I often catch it on my way home from the gym. This morning, one of the random facts had to do with dryer sheets. Apparently, one of the main ingredients used to soften fabrics is Beef Fat. You're welcome.

@Icegoddess ...yet another reason to avoid dryer sheets.

They are loaded with all sorts of chemicals and I don't want that in our clothing, bedding and towels.

I will stick with my dryer balls.

@Mersha I don't use then either. I can't handle the fragrance and they make your towels water repellent.

What's amazing to me with all the talk and action taken regarding air quality I'm SHOCKED that these dryer sheets haven't been banned.... Just taking a walk around our Condo Complex I can smell the aroma of the dryer sheets ---- they are that strong --- WHEW!!!

Who needs all that perfume in their laundry soap and in the clothes drying process---SMH!!!

There are a few laundry products out there void of all perfumes for people that have allergies....my sister uses those products.....she said they get her clothes clean without the added fragrance....

the substance is tallow......it can also be found in some soaps and candles.

Unstoppables are infernal. Sometimes I walk past a neighbor's house and it's like a wall of "freshness" envelops me because they're doing laundry and it's exhausting out from their house.

With so many people allergic to perfume and so many places that ban it, why the fad to embed indestructible plasticized perfumes into one's clothing and towels and unmentionables. Bleah.

I don't use fabric softener. If I want a soft fabric I buy an already soft fabric.

Getting asphyxiated by scents from dryer vents is no fun either. Once artificial fragrance is gone from your life you really notice.

@Spurt Yes, I do use one of the Free & Clear pods. For some reason, the Tide liquid is not near as strong as their pods, so I can use the liquid with no problem which I use for cold-water cycles.

@Spurt there are times when one neighbor is doing laundry and I have to shut the windows because of the smell of the dryer sheets or the laundry detergent.

I couldn't imagine what kind of headache I'd have if I had to smell it on my clothes all day long.

I can certainly understand the reason you shut your windows......I dont get how they can wear clothes with that strong of smell....even perfume disapates...

It's tallow and it's not just beef; I believe all non vegan fabric softeners us a animal fallow and an assortment of chemicals in their products. I only know this from a medical record I reviewed at work a few years ago. A girl had a long history of severe headaches and gi complaints. It went on for many years and she had every test, including allergy tests known to mankind. I don't know why but at some point, they reached out to the dryer sheet maker because while the family because that had been one of the few constants in the family. They had changed detergents many times but still used dryer sheets. The company helped with the investigation, turned out the girl had an allergy not to the tallow and not to the assortment of chemicals but to a combination of the tallow and other chemicals. The allergy thing was bizarre but what was more bizarre to me and my then co-worker was that fabric softener sheets contain animal products.

I only use laundry products that are "free and clear" because I cannot stand the smell of detergent, fabric softener, laundry sheets, etc.

I know so many people that use and love Gain because of the smell but I've never understood why I would want to smell my clothes all day long. I wear fragrance daily. I cannot imagine a fragrance mixed in with the smell of laundry products.

You lost me here with "vegans beware". I understand vegan in terms of eating, but not all that eat vegan, shy away from products that contain an animal substance.

Never could, or really wanted to go the vegan eating route. Decided in the mid '70's that lacto-ovo would be what I would try. Still eating the same way, just change ups now and then, when my body required different fuel to operate at it's best.

Off to the rink again Wednesday, but this once a week ain't helping me a whole lot with my skating balance or use of the edges.

You can throw a scented dryer sheet in your garbage can to deodorize it......so I would never put something like that in with my clothes. I, too, have to close my windows when the neighbor is "drying"......

@Spurt Yes there are, and I've been using them for years because of our allergies. Both Tide detergent and Downey liquid fabric softener have fragrance free products that work the same as the stinky perfumed versions. I use liquid Downey because i find that it makes a big difference in the appearance of clothing. Sometimes I forget to add it, and I can tell the difference as soon as I take clothes out of the washer to hang dry. I thought everyone knew not to put fabric softener in with towels.
