Question for those that sew

I am wanting to make some Christmas gift bags. I have a question for anyone that sews. See this picture. How do I put the seem for the ribbon drawstring down a inch or so it ruffles at the top. I know how to do a draw string but I don’t want it at the top. I want the seem about a inch from the top.

Do a double row of stitching after the fold over to thread the ribbon through.

Its very easy: fold over fabric, say four inches, decide how wide you want your ruffle, make a seam across your fabric at that point. Go down, say one inch, and make a parallel seam. Thread your cord or ribbon through this one inch tunnel and pull. Done. If you are having trouble visualizing this, Google "how to make a drawstring bag ( with gathered top). Good luck!

One way would be to take the width of the seam you would use to make your drawstring casing and increase that by the amount you want for your ruffle. So you'd fold over a wider flap than you would for just the drawstring, sew the lower edge, then stitch a line above that, leaving space for your drawstring to run thru. Basically you create a wide pocket and then sew a second seam near the bottom to thread your ribbon thru. The extra fabric above creates the ruffle when drawn up.

Oh that makes sense. Let me see if I understand. Make a fold about 1.5 inches and sew it. Then go back and stich it right in the middle of that. Here is the picture it didn’t seem to show up.

I'm not sure an iron on applique will stick and the iron will probably melt the sequins.

Why not use fabric glue to adhere appliance?

Yeah I can glue the appliqué on. It also won’t matter if the sequined melts underneath the appliqué because you won’t see it.

i was also think you could cut little holes around the bag and weave the ribbon through the holes instead of a seam. Either way it will look nice.

I think your original idea of the drawstring would look much better. Cutting holes in sequined fabric will cause a lot of raveling. What a sweet aunt you are!

One other question. I do have to have two little holes in the front to put the ribbon in seam? Do I make the seam in the front piece and the back piece or just the back piece?

Oh never mind. You make the seam on he front and back then the ribbon comes out the sides.

I stitch the 2 rows, leaving my opening on the front of the bag. I use a small safety pin to pull my ribbon through the seam, and once thru, cut to desired size for the bow I want.

That works too. I am going to use some fabric I have here to play before getting what I want. Will maybe try it tomorrow. My mom will have to stitch it on the machine but I can pin the seams so she knows where to make it.

@ccassaday ...For some reason I cannot visualize the instructions you were given, but am sure they will work. My first thought was a small buton hole to run the ribbon thru...like PJ that have a drawstring. The fold down instructions are probably easier. Have Fun...I love doing craty projects!

A bodkin, which your mother might have in her sewing box, will make the job of threading the ribbon through the channel easy as pie.

Be very aware of how wide apart the threading seams need to be. Boy you learn some new words if you go too close.

It you want multi use durability, before you do any fold downs, put button holes on the side seams.
