What Halloween costume did you dislike as a kid

this morn on the radio station I listen to here in Philly area the DJ's asked the audience to call the station to tell them what costume did your parents make you wear for Halloween that you absolutely hated.

some of the stories were very funny.

Most of my costumes i had for Halloween were the box store bought ones. Many were hand me downs. Some Halloween's we didn't wear costumes (grew up in the upper Midwest and sometimes the cold and snow froze us out for Halloween.

I can not remember any costume that i never really disliked.

I have to say I always liked my costumes. My mom was very clever and always helped me come up with great costumes.

We always made our costumes from whatever we could find around the house. My mother never helped us. She allowed us to wear what we wanted and we had a lot of fun.

One year, my youngest sister went to a Halloween party as Cousin It. We put a pillow case over her head and cut out eyes for her to see, then stapled brown paper streamers to the pillowcase until she was covered from shoes to the top of her head. We plopped a hat and glasses on her. She won first prize for best costume.

When my children were young, I always made their costumes and it took me a while. Once year I sewed three clown costumes. They were pretty involved and complicated. My oldest son refused to wear his because the legs were baggy. He finally agreed to wear his if I put rubber bands around his legs to slim down the legs. After that, I never made anything for Halloween unless they asked me too.

But I surely made a lot of Christmas costumes ..angels, Mary, Joseph and animals and St. Francis for bible school. My son had his picture in the local paper dressed in his St Francis costume, but his teacher put it on him backwards.

These are fun memories.

@viva923 The only time I hated a costume is when my mother made me put on a sweater or a coat over it when trick or treating.
What was the point in dressing up if no one was going to see my costume? 😜

@Carmie I also made my children a lot of Halloween and Christmas pagent costumes. I am not great at sewing but my DH learned from his sister and helped out a lot. I could fashion anything out of a hooded sweat shirt. My first was Blue from Blue"s Clues when my oldest DD was 18 months. I went on to make Dumbo, Clifford. I made my DD a donkey costume out of a hooded sweat shirt as well for her first Christmas pagent. She absolutely hated it. The next year I used a men's extra large t-shirt to make her an angel costume that she wore for both Halloween and Christmas. She liked that much better.

First off this was the 1960s so the masks were horrible. My mom made me be Lucille Ball. It snowed and it was freezing, the clothing and boots then were not what they are now. She jammed the dress part of the costume over my coat. I felt like a sausage. Then the mask. It was horrible in the cold. It was freezing inside it from my breathing! After three houses I told her I want to go home. The next morning I threw that mask in the garbage. Ahhh the memories huh? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No one had store bought costumes when I was young, and it was great. Nothing commercial then, no one had money to waste on things like that. We grab things in the closet and made due.

my sister and I were Southern belles. My mother bought two of these costumes and we had to wear them year after year and when neighbors asked us what we were we always had to say Southern belles. I was so embarrassed. They had these little pancake hats with ribbons. The material was like coated with plastic. Here is the cosest picture to the material I could find:

Ours were the plastic mask variety worn with our regular clothes so I didn't hate any of them. I remember being a princess, Yogi Bear and witch doctor. Elaborate and creative costumes were not part of our lives back then. We did get to wear our masks at school and had a classroom party.

@newname0 looks like they raided the linen closet for a sheet or tablecloth!

@Lisa Y I was going to post the same exact thing. At age 12, I broke my arm on Halloween so that ended my trick or treating! My mom arranged for my best friend to take a bucket for me and get what she could for me. Then she invited my friends over for a treat when they were done. That turned a sour day sweeter!

My mom sewed and she was very creative. Except for the year I had to wear a heavy coat over my super cool skeleton costume, I loved showing off my costumes every year.

I do seriously regret one costume I got for my son to wear one year.... but that's a whole other thread.

Sitting here thinking about this has brought me to laughter! I cannot come up with one I disliked but like others I recall having to put the costume over our winter coats and yes feeling like a total sausage, LOL! (life in the northeast) My mom always got us store bought ones but did let us pick our own. In the 60's, so we also wore those horrible plastic masks that you couldn't see out of or breathe in, actually may have had long term health effects, now that I think about it.........anyway I digress, my favorite one was Dorothy from the wizard of Oz, I even had a little stuffed dog in a basket!!

My prime trick or treating day were from 1950 to 1954 and I remember two particularly great costumes my Mother made from McCalls patterns. One year I was Martha Washington and my slightly younger brother was George Washington (we both had wigs) and the next year I was Statue of Liberty and he was Uncle Sam. We didn't have elaborate masks, just the kind that covered your eyes. I'm pretty sure my brother still has those costumes stored away. This was an error when most costumes were handmade but many were made of crepe paper ( remember when you could buy sheets of that and either glue or sew it?). I wish I had some of our tin noise makers or paper mache pumpkins (for collecting goodies) they are quote collectable, very valuable!

We didn't have costumes because it was always too cold, sometimes snowing. But we all had masks. My favorite was Snow White. Our parents didn't involve themselves in our choice of masks, just paid for them.

After supper on Halloween night, we put on our masks, each took a paper lunch bag for the candy, and went out together to ring doorbells. My parents stayed home to answer ours. When we ran out of houses we went home, were forbidden to eat our candy, and usually finished it before bed.

I always had the store bought costumes that came in a box and they were all horrible. I can still remember the way the hard plastic face masks smelled. I have no idea where they came from because this was before Walmart and other discount stores. I guess that's why when my children were trick or treating I tried hard to find costumes that they wanted. Even had a Princess Leah costume made for my daughter one year.

I always got one of the boxed costumes. You know-- the big square box with the clear plastic on top so you could see the mask. I loved those kind!

One year I picked out Morticia from the Addams Family. I loved the mask because of the makeup (lol) and the long black wig.

The dress was a silky fabric, but was a mermaid bottom and was hard to walk up and down people's front steps.

By the end of the night it was shredded at the bottom and ripped halfway up my legs.

One year my best friend picked out a Felix the Cat costume. Except the box had a Batman outfit hidden under the mask. Someone must've switched them. Don't know why she didn't just wear a black outfit with the mask. But she wore the Felix mask with the Batman costume--cape and all!

I had the costume in the box. These were sold at Woolworths , I recall. I had a Princess Fairy one with a cardboard crown and Wand. I enjoyed dressing up with it. Wore it several years as my parents did not allow new anything every year. That was not fun. Took it to school for our classroom parties.

6th grade ,age 11 , was my last year and I felt humiliated when a neighbor I did not know told me, I was too old to treat. I had a plastic pumpkin with a light from batteries and my Mother watched me following me and the pumpkin.
