On 12/5/2013 Linders Back said:
One book from about the same period as The Thorn Birds is Penmarric by Susan Howatch. Great family saga that follows generations and has some legitimate "Oh No" and "Tear-jerker" moments just when things appear to be running smoothly. Loved it. Takes place in England or maybe Wales.

More recent one that I enjoyed was Ken Follett's Fall of Giants. Have the 2nd in the series, Winter of the World set aside for January reading. Someone else mentioned Fred Mustard Stewart and he has also written a few really good family-saga type novels (names escape me .. read them in the 80's). He also has written some Gothic horror type which might not be to your liking.

Another book I just read was "Forever" by Pete Hamill. Follows the life of one man through centuries as it has a more mystical bent (he is saved from death in the 1700's and will live forever as long as he never leaves Manhattan). He is a wonderful writer.

Recommendations for other books of this " caliber". I just loved TTB and recently re-read Kane & Abel which was another great read. Any books from past or present that are fabulous? I know this is a vague question - but the specific fiction genre does not matter. Just want a great storyline. TIA

Men to Match My Mountains by Irving Stone. Historical fiction about the exploration and settlement of the West. I've given this book to male friends as a gift. They love it and so did I.

I only know this story in a movie form. Possibly it was in books, but "Centennial" was great that way. I was just thinking the other day, to get that series out and rewatch it.

THE OMG book of all time for me was Peachtree Road by Anne Rivers Siddons. I was absolutely engrossed in it. My husband kept saying WHAT are you reading? I told him briefly about the plot and he sort of sneered and said well it wouldn't be something he would read.

I finished it and was just saying "I can't believe this book" so he started reading it and couldn't put it down! LOL!! He would die if I told anyone he read that I think! He agrees it is a stunner!

Beach Music is a great read, but doesn't leave you the way PR does.

Based in England in 1600s and Amber is rather like Scarlett O'Hara who is my favorite herione of all time.

Amber lets nothing stop her from getting what she wants.

I will read it again.

Great to see all the old favorites and great reads. Brings me back to my long ago summers and the beach!

A really good read is North and South, sorry, can't remember the author. The TV miniseries of the same name made stars out of Patrick Swayze and James Read. Also Hawaii by James Michener is a good long summer book.

Anything by Judith Krantz makes for easy summer reading, too. Not great literature but a guilty pleasure!

Candy

Edited to correct James Read's name. When I checked IMDB.com I couldn't believe how many "unknown" actors in the series became pretty big stars.

qualitygal, Centennial was based on James Michener's book of the same name, which was written as a tribute to America's bicentennial. My favorite character was Pasquinel, a French fur trapper, who was featured in the first three episodes of the mini-series. The book is around 900 pages and follows the timeline of a fictional area in Colorado. If you like Michener's approach to fiction, you'll love Centennial.
