It was a short report about "livestream shopping", which basiclaly is what QVC provides.

You can't go into a clothing store anymore and try on clothes, so designers are increasingly moving to streaming video to sell.

Or at least that's what I gathered from the brief segment.

The moms I know who are in their 30's and early 40's usually don't like to cook. BUT, they will do it rather than buy take-out for their children. They tell me take-out is too expensive (it is!), And, they like knowing what is going into their children's bodies. I think they are even more conscientious than my generation, because they are more well informed. Also, they don't have the time to watch or to follow QVC. So good luck with that. Grandma can watch and buy, however! Hahaha!

I guess I need to say my 35 year old nephew probably cooks more than anyone I know. Cooks from cookbooks from good chefs. No Mac and cheese. Mostly Italian food.

Everyone here speaks for their own families.

Interesting stuff ------Particularly the last articl.....

Wellandgood.com Erin Mangner April 15 2019

A recent report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that “millennials consume food in a restaurant or bar around 30 percent more often than any other generation.” The 23-to-38-year-old set also allocates less time to meal prep than their older counterparts—around just 13 minutes per day, which adds up to nearly an hour less per week than Gen X—and when they do head to the grocery store, they spend more on prepared foods, pasta, and sweets than other age groups.

At the same time, America is experiencing a massive takeout boom, thanks to delivery apps that bring all manner of restaurant meals to your door in just a few taps. In a June 2018 report titled “Is the Kitchen Dead?,” analysts at investment firm UBS predicted that global online food ordering will grow by 20 percent per year between now and 2030. The market is currently valued at $35 billion, but within the next 11 years, it’s set to reach $365 billion, if not more. The report also envisions a future in which drone delivery and robot chefs lower the costs of takeout to the point where it’s actually more expensive to cook a meal at home than to order in.

And this is from an article from Business Insider---Mary Hanbury June 24, 2018

"Online food ordering has started to become the norm, thanks to the convenience, accuracy, and ability to integrate payments," UBS analysts wrote. "At scale, ubiquitous on-demand and subscription delivery of prepared food could potentially spell the end of cooking at home."

Millennials are three times more likely to order in than their parents are, according to the report. The main reason for this is likely the convenience that food delivery offers. But it has become an even more enticing option recently as the quality of restaurants now offering delivery has gone up.

Moreover, UBS estimated that we could see the cost of ordering in decrease to such an extent that it would become cheaper than preparing your own food at home. This could be made possible if delivery drones and robots became part of the process.

These changes could have a negative impact on US food producers that rely on food ingredient sales to individual consumers. The report notes that General Mills and Kraft Heinz, which are known for their ready-made or home-prepared meals like General Mills' Betty Crocker desserts or Kraft's signature macaroni and cheese, could be hit worst if they do not adapt.

"Those retailers that can redirect, or at least diversify, sales to new avenues of growth such as online grocery, ready-to-eat meals, quick service restaurants, etc., should see a benefit," the report said.

UBS also singled out Sonic Drive-In as being one of the few fast-food chains that could suffer from the death of the kitchen because its drive-in concept is, by nature, not suited for delivery. Other fast-food chains, however, are showing they're up for the challenge.

Chains from McDonald's and Chipotle to Panera and Taco Bell are making a major push towards delivery. In May, Chipotle reported delivery sales had skyrocketed 667% after it struck a deal with DoorDash in late April, Business Insider's Kate Taylor reported. The same week, GrubHub announced it was taking Jack in the Box delivery nationwide on Thursday, adding a new chain to its portfolio of partnerships that includes Taco Bell and KFC.

"Consumers go in and out of habits," Panera CEO Blaine Hurst said to Taylor. "If I decide I want to try delivery and they don't have delivery as an option, I'm going to try another restaurant."

And this from USA TODAY--

Daniel Payne May 12, 2018

Millennials take a lot of flack, some of it deserved and some of it unfair, but there is one criticism of this generation that has merit: We are not particularly good at cooking. A recent survey from Porch.com drove this point home: Millennials cook less than any living American generation. At first blush, the numbers actually don’t look too terrible: My generation cooks, on average, just two fewer meals per week than Baby Boomers. And though 18% of those meals are from “frozen or prepackaged” sources, that's less than 5 percentage points higher than the Boomers.

But “cooking” is not a monolithic undertaking: It matters what you cook as well, and young people today are increasingly functionally inept in the kitchen. Barely a third of Millennials in the Porch.com survey knew how to cook poached eggs; a scant 50% of them knew how to roast a chicken. Only 41% could make salad dressing, possibly the simplest recipe in the culinary canon. Nearly two-thirds were unable to make a chicken salad sandwich. These numbers, which are lower than previous generations and which point to a steady decline in basic culinary skills, have been replicated elsewhere. The USDA found earlier this year that young people spend nearly an hour less per day than Generation Xers on food prep and cleanup, and that on average they buy fewer raw ingredients than everyone else. My generation beat the others in only three categories of food purchases: pasta, sweets and “prepared foods.”

Something strange is going on. Young people on average watch more cooking shows than everyone else, and yet they cook less, and more poorly; we are the Foodie Generation but we’re not all that interested in making our own food. This is a poverty. There are a whole host of reasons to get good at cooking and to cook most of your own meals. It’s cheaper, for one; eating out, which accounts for over 40% of yearly food expenditures for the average family, is manifestly more expensive than eating at home. We cannot expect to raise a generation of financially secure Americans if we do not raise them to be culinarily self-sufficient.

Well I guess Reever is right. When my generation grew up there were hardly any take out places and even if there were our parents couldn't afford them.

Bundling women in their 30s and 40s into a category of women who don't cook really does a disservice to the many who do. My two daughters-in-law both work - one has a PhD and the other is a nurse. Both of them are good cooks, but they also order a pizza once in awhile or bring home something from a fast food place - that is not the norm though. The nurse puts me to shame for the recipes she tries, and both of them try to feed their boys healthy meals - the majority of the meals having been prepared at home. JMO, but the art of cooking has not been lost on the younger generation....watching food channels just isn't something that most of them do.

@Reever, thank you for your comment. I guess it's like everything...most companies won't survive if they cater only to those of us in our 60s and 70s. They really have to reach out to our sons and daughters as they look for another group of customers and market to their needs. Times have changed as they do with each generation. Remember how frozen dinners helped moms in the late 50s and 60s, and microwave ovens changed us in the 60s and 70s! I don't look at it as being abandoned, but rather another segment that has their own needs that are different from mine!

Am I the only person reading who finds the assumption that cooking is done by females pretty regressive?

The surveys and articles about food procurement trends were done prior to the pandemic. It's likely that many who were previously happy doing delivery and takeout can no longer afford it and have learned basic cooking by necessity. Be interesting to see the status of things now.

I've done a lot of cooking and eating but I've never cooked or eaten a poached egg.
