"...the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen -- has died after a long battle with throat cancer ... TMZ has learned.

Sources directly connected to the rock star tell us ... he died at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica Tuesday. His wife, Janie, was by his side, along with his son, Wolfgang, and Alex, Eddie's brother and drummer.

We're told in the last 72 hours Eddie's ongoing health battle went massively downhill -- doctors discovered his throat cancer had moved to his brain as well as other organs."

I'm shocked and saddened to read that news. He was such an amazing musician. Is it just me or does it seem like we are losing great people left and right these days?

It's not just you. I've been thinking the same thing, too. So many of the truly great talents (in a variety of fields) are dying off. It is tough to take.

Sorry to read this - I saw him many times in concert, he was a once-in-a-lifetime guitar player -huge loss for his family and for the fans.

When I told my husband he slumped a little. He's a guitar player. Van Halen was so much a part of my young years. R.I.P. in guitar heaven.

I am shocked and so sad to hear this! I will always remember him with Valerie though, they were together a long time before divorcing! He had such a cute smile too. RIP!
