Am I Obligated

So I just got a call from someone claiming to be calling from GEICO looking for a woman (not me) to set up a time to look at her car on Wednesday ( it was left on my answering machine). I have tried the reverse phone lookup, none of them are free and I'm not paying to find out who owns the number. Now this could be on the up and up, but I'm skeptical, I don't want to call if it's a scam. I feel bad if the guy is really looking for this woman, but I don't want to take the chance it's a scam. Would you call him back and tell him he has the wrong number?

Nope--not your obligation. This happened to me several years ago when they had the area code wrong and were trying to reach someone in New Mexico. I ignored the calls, but answered one time because I actually had a claim with the same insurance company. At that time, I did tell them they needed to call the number with the area code 505, not the one they were calling.

Of course you're not obligated but it might be a nice thing to do if you're feeling benevolent.

I would ignore the call.The person who he is trying to reach will call him if she doesn't hear from him.

One time we got a wrong number call from some doctors office cancelling the appointment. I called them back to tell them they had the wrong number and if they were in front of me they would have been looking at me like I had 4 heads and 7 eyes. Absolutely clueless as to why I would call them to tell them that.

I won't do it again, so I am going to say you are not obligated.

What am I missing here? It was a wrong number, surely you have had wrong numbers before. LOL Obligated to do what? They didn't ask you for your credit card number or your Social Security number so how could it be a scam?

Not obligated. But, yes. IMO, it is a courtesy. But do not offer any personal information if solicited.

No your not obligated but I have let people know when they have called that they have the wrong number. It did no harm.

I have a number with the last 2 digits swapped with a local granite place. I would ignore these calls left on voicemail, til this poor man kept calling and epseemed more and more desperate. Finally , I called his number and told him it was a wrong number.

Yes I would without hesitation. Caller already has my number and my answering machine has a generic greeting so not my name. I don't have to disclose any info so I don't see an issue.

Based on just that line No is the way to go.

The feeling bad tells me you definitely should erase the callback number and message immediately. It's a wrong number, leave it at that and don't call them back. Have a good afternoon. 😃

In this case, a little paranoia is a good thing. Some scammers are extremely sophisticated these days. I was recently conned out of a large sum of money through a convoluted telephone scam with no recourse to recover my loss. And I thought I’d heard of all the possible cons out there. To the OP: I wouldn’t call Geico back. Geico or the person it’s trying to reach will figure out the mistake sooner or later without your help. If you do feel it necessary to call Geico back, at the very least I’d block your outgoing phone number.

In this day of one scam after another, I would ignore and delete messages that I know aren't for me, or don't concern me.

I've come to the point with all these unsolicited calls, that I don't have the time or the patience or the desire to figure out who is who, what is real, what is a scam. I ignore them all.

If it's someone's mistake but legit, they will just have to figure it out.

Dont call him back !!!! Its probably a "fishing" call,,,my Mom got one from a woman who claimed to be from Amazon
