Regal Cinemas Closing Permanently

There goes DS' part-time job that he has had since high school. He had worked in another theater since college. That one is supposed to reopen the end of October, but I doubt it will.

The parent company of Regal decided this after the new James Bond movie release was postponed once again, this time until April 2021. The company fears another lockdown.

I love going to the movie theater, and Regal is the one closest to us. They remodeled to include reclining seats and reserved seating. I loved "our" seats. This is one outing I was looking forward to resuming next year (I hope).

I guess movie theaters will never be the same either. Maybe we'll go to all drive through (?)

It is sad for all employees but no surprise. You can't stay closed for a long period of time with no new movies and expect a turn around. Life is certainly changing from a year ago.

They don't seem to be closing everywhere. Not in my area; we have Regal and Flagship and they're all still open.

Update 10/06: Well, our Regal Cinemas have just closed and Flagship is only showing films Friday through Sunday. I'll see how long they last.

Cineworld Group PLC, the parent company, will close all U.S. and U.K theaters within the next week, impacting 543 U.S. locations.

Not surprising at all. Especially now that you can stream brand new movies right in the home. I mentioned before on here that my hubby had set up a home movie theatre years ago with a projecter and large screen with surround sound. We haven't been to a movie theatre in a long time. Why would we when you can sit and watch in the comfort of your home? Me, in my La Z Boy chair and my glass of wine. But seriously in today's world, it's just not a good idea to put yourself in a theatre with other people coughing and sneezing.

Though I am sorry for job losses but do feel it's a dying industry, JMO.

this is very sad news if it goes forward.

Cineworld is the second-largest movie theater operator on a global basis as well as in the U.S.

The plan to close the locations isn’t definite, the person familiar with the situation said, and a final decision isn’t likely until Monday or Tuesday.

Not everybody has the money or space to set up a home theater, or want to pay for a streaming service.

Some people actually enjoy (myself included) going to the movies.

I must admit, we haven't gone to the movie theaters in many years. Our house has a movie theater and we would wait until the movie came out on DVD. But even before moving into this house, we didn't go to the movies that much. My husband would go to see the big blockbusters like Star Wars and Avengers with his entire office but that's about it. I used to love going to the movies. I used to go often. As with all the other closings, I feel bad for the company and its employees.

@Anonymous032819 - While I have a nice home, I don't have a "home theatre" in my home. (Not sure about that other poster's comment). But my grandkids really enjoy going to see a movie on the big screen. I don't think anyone's "home theatre" can duplicate it. I also don't need to drink wine while watching a movie. So, like you, I enjoy going out to the movie theatre occasionally - especially taking the kids.

Lots of people have home theatre's now and it is really not that costly to set them up.

I didn't mean to sound snobby or anything. Our system is certainly not the fanciest available but it works well for us. It's great for football games too. To each his own but I was just saying I feel it's going to be a less popular destination and already is.

And I will enjoy my glass of wine and you enjoy whatever you like.

In the future once we get Covid under control, I bet theaters will make a comeback along with lots of entertainment.

This realignment could be a good thing. Theaters used to be owned locally. I would love to see them back in independent hands. I always enjoy going to indie theaters so much more than the megagoogaplexes. The megaplexes feel like larger but sterile subtitute for watching at home. The indie palaces feel like a fun event run by actual human beings.

I've never really understood the appeal of home movie set ups but after reading your post , I do. Of course, I haven't been to a movie theatre in about 10 years. I watch everything in my comfy chair on my iPad. I have no need for a TV , although we have 3. I suspect when we move that will do down to one new one.

We have a mall that has been closed for over 30 years. Some sort of local politics,not even sure. At the ends there are two businesses that have done well. Lately they have tried to revive the mall setting and have added an Indian restaurant and now a movie theatre with modern seats and lots of extras. Kind of a designer movie theatre with all the bells and whistles. Sadly it is my opinion that it will be popular for a few months and then all downhill Most of us can watch TV or stream or whatever to get movies. Cable has taken over. Why pay twice.

We only had one Regal in our area and it closed last year. I think it was in a bad location. A really nice, upscale theater opened close to us three years ago...it is independent and wonder if it will make it. Our favorite theater was an older Cinemark one several miles from here...but it had old school seating and not ear-piercing surround sound Dolby...DH loved it...it was also $1 to see a movie that had been out over three weeks...they closed six months ago and "updated" it with big leather reclining seats, table service, etc. They also updated the ticket prices to $18...we never went back and I am sure they wish they had left it the way it was.

My favourite theatre. It was midway between two friends and myself so we'd meet there to catch up and watch a movie. I still have 2200 points I was saving for popcorn. I read some theatre changed over to Regal, renovating completely, Bad timing I guess. Right now mine is playing what they call classics, like Star Wars. Come on, show Cleopatra, Gone with the Wind, The Birds. Not something we all own and see all the time. I could go to a walk in alone too if I wanted to. Our local drive in that recently reopened, I would not feel comfortable alone in my car. In the dark. I hope theatres come back since I don't do the whole streaming thing.

DH & I love going to the movies. That's one of the many things we miss doing during this Pandemic.

I'm sorry for all the people who will lose their jobs as a result.The hurt & damage Covid has caused is far reaching & very sad 😢.

Have never enjoyed the movie theater experience all that much, but I know some people do. There were a few movies I simply had to see on the big screen. Jaws comes to mind.
