I think they expected this. Tourist destinations, including Disney's parks are struggling in the pandemic but Disney is a business and still has to try to stay afloat. Luckily for the company their movies, network TV shows and new channel are going to keep them from totally sinking. This pandemic is just awful on every level. I hope the employees are able to find work elsewhere.

I have my own thoughts about Disney, not many of them good. I didn't go to Disney before, I sure as heck wouldn't go now.

Seems logical that any business limiting their capacity will need fewer workers. I really didn't think we'd still be in this situation - very unfortunate.

I am not sure what you mean by what did they expect? They just like any business made plans to expect the worse, hope for the best. They were figuring it out in real time just like everyone else who never had to deal with this ever before.

From what I've read, they simply expected higher attendance. They didn't count on the reluctance of families to travel by air to their destinations.

I'm also reading about more layoffs and furloughs in the aviation industry, and that they're going to seek another bailout. That would probably be throwing good money after bad at this point. But it's hard for me to conceive of what it must be like to work for decades in an industry yet still have years to work before retirement and see that industry fade away before your eyes, your livelihood with it. I think the bailouts should go to the employees.

I live in Ohio and we have an awesome amusement park here, Cedar Point. In years past they had to shut down the park to further visitors because it was so crowded.

This year is totally different. Everyone must wear a mask unless you are eating or drinking and they are strictly enforcing that. There are some rides that you are given a specific time to ride so as to avoid crowding while waiting. Personally, the whole thing sounds like too much of a hassle to me but then I'm not an amusement park fan. I can only imagine the losses they have incurred this year.

Exactly... Like many, they might also have been hoping for a miracle or at least for the highly vaunted 'science' to have come up with something other than social distancing to abate the impact of this virus by now...

@Mersha @Pearlee @At first reading, I thought the poster was making some kind of anti Semitic remark so I looked into this. I found the post was just the opposite of this. It seems that working conditions at Disney have been so disliked by some of the workers that they have likened it to Auschwitz, so they nicknamed the place Mousewitz. They have also nicknamed it Duckau.

I think Disney expected customers to trust them to keep them safe. Which they did. But people don't trust Florida to keep them safe. Which also makes perfect sense.

Disney has Covid rules. Florida doesn't.

Florida is making a big point that anything goes and you're on your own when it comes to Covid in their state. Visit at your own risk. Okay good rock on with your bad selves thanks for letting us know.

I know TWO, very talented kids with impeccable training in their skill areas. Both were furloughed early in the pandemic.

The inability to open Disneyland has led to the bulk of the fiscal stress.

Disney has been covering health benefits for most furloughed employees but can no longer do that financially.

The demand to visit the Florida operations, at reduced capacity, exists. Florida is not the primary financial problem.
