Planning a wedding for 450??

A colleague of mine, who is getting married in March, just informed me yesterday that the guest list is comprised of 450 people. I was rather surprised since the date is only 5 months away. I told him that a gathering of 450 people is illegal right now and it could still be illegal come March. He didn't seemed concerned at all.

I just find it silly to be planning a huge event in the middle of a pandemic. I don't get it. What are your thoughts?

Pandemic or not, a wedding for 450 people is just too much, IMO

Maybe they are planning to hold the wedding in Florida... We are 100% open now. They can have as many people squeezed together as they want here. Of course, people will still get COVID-19 and possibly die but the powers that be say it is safe so it must be. Yeahright.

I can't imagine planning a wedding for 450 even in the best of times. I am an old fuddy duddy and a scrooge. It is all a big waste of money JMHO.

Sometimes it is all about the wedding fantasy instead of the marriage union. Again, JMHO.

Probably just wants lots of gifts and doesn't expect most people to attend. Or he just doesn't care if his guests get sick as long as he can have a good time. Either way it reflects very poorly on him.

My thoughts are a whole lotta' mixed feelings.

On one hand I'm thinking...'what an optomist'...then I'm thinking..'what an idiot'...again...they must have money to burn...but the other pesky side of my brain says...'these people are(depending on contract) causing a lot of businesses to loose a lot of money...but then I think, 'what business in their right mind would agree to plan (and agree) to provide everything for 450 people in this Covid age of not knowing from one minute to the other'.

Phew! See what I mean? If I had to wrap my feelings in a bow...I'd say...stupids must have a way of identifying other stupids.

if that space is in texas and it normally holds 900 people, then she is all set. there are no specific number capacities, but the venue can only be at 50% capacity.

The Governor’s office released a checklist for wedding guests and a checklist for wedding venues, with guidance including:

Outdoor venues should be used when possible
Weddings held inside a facility other than a church are limited to 50% of the total listed occupancy of the facility
Employees and contractors of the wedding venue are not counted towards the 50% occupancy limitation
All employees and customers must wear a face covering (over the nose and mouth) wherever it is not feasible to maintain six feet of social distancing from another individual not in the same household

@sunshine45 - This is not in Texas. This is another state and it's illegal in this state.

in march 2020 we had a wedding all planned and ready. we unfortunately had to cancel it ten days before it happened at the hotel venue we chose. it was a HUGE disappointment. we had planned and worked for over a year and a lot of money had gone into it. we had invited about 250 people, but it got down to 200 by the time the final total was given.

we were able to have the shower in february at one of our favorite restaurants. we had about 65 women at the shower.

the bride and groom did not want to postpone their wedding, so we ended up doing a small ceremony in our home.....the bridal party, some family, the officiant and his wife, the photographers. we were about 25 people. it ended up being a very nice day, but certainly not what we had planned.

some people sent gifts, others did not. none of the gifts were returned.

My thoughts? Since I cannot read his mind and therefore cannot know his intentions, whether he invites 4 people or 450 is his choice.

Some families are huge and I'm sure all 450 guests are not all from his side.

If the plans fall through next March, then he and his fiance will have lost out; and if the wedding falls through they are obligated to return all gifts.

I'm not looking at this as a gift grab; I am not going to start the same lame accusation that he doesn't care about illness. I don't know why every little thing has to turn into such negativity without even knowing this couple.

It's a matter of choice for the bride and groom AND the guests; nobody is being forced to attend.

I'd rather hope that by next spring there will be the opportunity to have life back to more normal than not; so I'm just going to hope things work out for everyone.

And in the end mind my own business.

If you have a bunch of people packed together inside, eating and drinking, that means they are packed together indoors, not social distancing, and not wearing masks. It's really simple to see why that is wrong. No rocket science degree needed. What is so hard to understand?

If you can have everybody space way apart in household groups and do it all outside, wearing masks and for the love of mike no buffets, then maybe. I don't see where you're going to find enough room for over 400 souls though.

And I doubt this guy cares enough to consider any of this since we already know he plans to pack all those people into church pews together.
