My Mailman

I get my mail late everyday, after 4:00, today it was closer to 5:30. I know my regular mail carrier worked today, I saw him. Anyway I got a package today, he leaves it on my porch. I don't have young children, he knows I don't, why can't he ring the bell? This same mailman gets annoyed if in the winter I occasionally give him a letter to take back to the post office ( he's going anyway and he shoots daggers at me). I am an idiot because I give him a $50 tip at Christmas. No one likes him, I don't think he gets much at Christmas time, I may discontinue my tipping, I can't get much worse service from him.

I too have a mailman that is not very nice. If I get a package and he can't fit in in the box he will leave it at the door, no doorbell or knock and put my mail in the box so I have to walk out to get it. I one time had a small package that I didn't thnk would fit in the outgoing slot we have in our bundle of mailboxes and he bawled me out for making him get out of lhis truck and come to the door. I don't give him a tip at Christmas or any other time. That is not the way they are suppose to act but some are like that. I keep hoping he will retire soon the gal who does his route when he is off is so nice and if I get a package from her she brings all my mail to the door and rings the doorbell and then waits to say hi when I open the door. I would definitly reward her for her kindness.

My subdivision has a central multi-mailbox....and it's not even within walking distance for me.....

To all the posters who said that their mail carrier sucks...Don't

tip him during the holidays. He will get the idea. I have a wonderful mail carrier who goes above and beyond the call of duty for me, and everyone in my building. It's a big building! I do tip him, but I also just treat him like a human being and I think he appreciates that even more. When he's absent, I know because who ever fills in tries to stuff everything in the narrow mailbox, or leaves it on the ledge of the mailboxes which makes it a free for all! I'm thankful for my mail carrier, because like many of you, in the past, I have had several that sucked. I hope he won't retire no time soon.

We love our mailwoman! We even have her phone number & text her when we are expecting something important. She is the greatest! I even text her when Enstrom's toffee is going to be on QVC because she loves it! I used to give it to her for Christmas, but now she stocks up on her own.

I doubt that it's part of the carrier to ring the bell. Their job duties are to carry the mail and drop it off. Even UPS and FedEx carriers don't do that, at least around here. It's not something I would expect of them.

I looked it up on USPS site and it said:

Place larger packages on porch or doorstep.

My mailman is fantastic!

I have an online Etsy business and the weeks leading up to Christmas I'm very busy. I leave a lot of large packages by my front door on the porch and he'll come up and take them into the truck for me when I schedule a pick up....yes I know it's part of their job but during the holidays he picks up a lot for me.

I also give him a generous tip because of the extra work that he does for me.

To my knowledge , no Federal Worker can accept tips or gifts. I know with all the other Federal agencies , you can be fired for accepting any type of gift or gratuity .

@Desertdi ...You have to drive to your mailbox? Wow, that's insane. We lived in different areas here in AZ but only had to walk a short distance for the mail. Someone there in Phoenix where you live really dropped the ball when they designated an area for your mail delivery and pick up.

I love my mailman! He rang my doorbell one day, months ago, shortly after I started working from home, and asked if it was OK to leave packages inside my screen door. Packages left on the doorstep can be seen from the street and that is not safe so I appreciate it. Packages that are too big get put by my back door. He left 2 small packages inside the screen door today and I was happy I got to the door before he was too far away to thank.

I am not working at home now so I have some packages sent to my private post office but, some, I send to my home address because I know they will fit inside the screen door out of sight.

The USPS processes 181.1 million pieces of mail daily. There are 472.1 million processes and delivers pieces of mail daily. They provide this service in all types of weather and locales for what I consider reasonable prices. It's wonderful that the Constitution requires a national postal service as I suspect that many of us would not be able to afford private postal services.

@Jordan2 Why in the WORLD did you give a tip to someone so unpleasant? Makes no sense PLUS he is in violation of regulations already posted.

Stop the madness.

No one is obliged to give gifts to mail carriers and there is a $20 limit for gift cards and such.

@Jordan2 ...First of all I want to say you are far too generous by giving your mail carrier $50 at Christmas. I think it is time for that carrier to get the message that you are not happy with his/her service. Instead of $50 put a five dollar bill in an envelope this year which will speak volumes about how you feel.

If that doesn't do the trick, than from there on out...no more tips, period. Good luck.

I used to have a really good mailman.Since he retired I see different ones all the time.Some are better than others. I don't tip because the service & the mail person varies.

In the summer I do offer them bottles of water when I happen to see them.

I do have sort of a friendship with the UPS guy. I've had the same one for over 10 years.He is polite & helpful. When I tell him I'll be away he holds my packages for me.In the summer I give him cold water & in the winter I give him coffee in a to go cup. He will not accept Christmas gifts.

I have a great Mail lady ... at christmas I give her 30.00 as a tip... she works hard all year & deserves it 😍

I give my mailman taco bell and subway cards ever year. He has been our mailman for 20 years or so. He eats there everyday, lol...so i thought htis would be osmehting he would use. He is wonderful. Cheery, helpful and accurate with the mail we sure can tell when someone covers him. Anywa, he accepts the gifts.
