He said if they eat them or the mice that gets them.
In the winter they have come in the garage. I found a plastic trap that closes and keeps them inside, quick kill & no poison.

@1Snickers The traps are in the very back of my cabinets where my dog and cat can't get. I asked the pest control man about my pets eating the dead mice. He said that the poison that they use is a human drug (I think it was an anticoagulant). He said the little bit that the mouse can get wouldn't hurt my cat or dog. He said that isn't what all poison is, but it's what they use. I don't think either one of my pets would eat a dead mouse (or a live oneI) anyway, but I did worry about that.

@NickNack To be safe you could ask your veterinarian to be certain the poison traps are safe. Better safe than sorry!

I had just finished brushing my teeth and turned around to look at Ava, my dog. There was a dead mouse in front of her. I didn't see it when I went in the bathroom, but it could have been there. I got Ava out of the bathroom and closed the door. I got a grocery bag and a lot of paper towels and picked it up and took it outside to the trash can.

I saw a couple of mouse drippings in my bathroom cabinet and a hole beside the pipe. The hole had been caulked the last time I saw a mouse (about five years ago), and the caulk had worn away. I stuffed a steel wool pad in the hole as best as I could.

I will call a handyman on Monday to come and really seal the hole well. I hate mice! I've lived in this house for 30 years, and have seen a mouse three times. The first time was right after I moved in. It was a new house, and they had probably come in when the house was being built. Then about five years ago I saw one and set traps but never got one. I called a pest control company to come and set poison bait traps. He set them in the very back of all the cabinets and in the air return vent. They are in plastic containers. He said they should last for a long time.

Maybe the poison is still working and that's what killed the mouse. I'll have a hard time walking in the bathroom in the middle of the night. I hate mice!

My house is clean, and there is no food left out at all.

Edited to add: The poison bait trap is a block of human blood thinner. The pest control man told me that the tiny bit that the mouse would eat would not kill my cat or dog if they ate the mouse. I don't think either of my pets would eat a mouse.

You'd think with cats I'd have no mice in the house. Wrong. But I bought an electric mouse trap and loved it. No poison, no glue trap. It electrocutes the mouse with high voltage.

Thankfully, it's been over a year since there've been any mice in the house.

Having just gone through a problem with mice in hubby's SUV, I'm not real fond of the little poison traps. Long story short, I went to Home Depot and bought a package of mouse traps (where you put a little food on the trap - hubby used peanut butter), as well as the little boxes with poison in them and put both in his SUV on the floor. The mouse trap caught one mouse overnight and we got rid of it.

The poison trap had been nibbled on, but we couldn't find the 2nd mouse. Fast forward a couple of days and the odor was getting intense! We had the SUV thoroughly cleaned and the guy found the dead mouse under a layer of carpet. Honestly, I would not have found it. The moral of my story is that the mouse traps are quick, easy and the mouse doesn't have time to hide/die. We are still fighting the odor from that blasted dead mouse that ate the poison and then burrowed under carpet to die!~ No more poison traps here!

I would never use poison to kill mice or any other animal. If a dog, cat or even a bird ate the dead mouse, it would ingest the poison and it's a horrible way to die. (The animal - including the mouse - bleeds to death internally.)

I use Victor Electonic mouse traps, whenever I have a problem. Very effective, a quick kill and no potential harm to any of my cats.

I didn't read every response so this may have already been suggested. However, in the meantime before the exterminator gets to your home, plug the holes with steel wool. You can usually purchase large bags pretty inexpensively at Home Depot, etc. If you can't get out, use Brillo pads.

I'm sure this isn't a popular opinion but I would use a catch and release trap for a mouse or rat. It really bothers me to kill any creature.

When my husband had to clean out his parents house after his mother passed away he found out that a small room that his father had built on to the house and used as a storage room had a mother raccoon and babies inside. His father had passed away many years earlier and his mother had never gone into the room. Somehow momma raccoon had found a way to get in and felt it was safe for her babies. My husband called an animal control company to remove them. We both assumed that they would trap them and release them into the many wooded areas surrounding the house.

Fortunately the day before they were to come to the house we found out that they were just going to kill both mom and babies. That was totally unacceptable to us. What we did was turn on loud music in the shed and leave the door open. The next morning they were gone. We watched on the cameras and saw mom take each baby in her mouth and one by one she carried them across the street and into the woods. She had five babies altogether and it was so heartwarming to see how she cared for them.

Even though I don't care for raccoons because I'm slightly afraid of them, there was no way that I could have ever allowed them to be killed like that.

The company had given my husband a business card with a picture of a raccoon on it so a few days after mom and babies moved away he took the card and handed it to me. On it he had written the words coming from the raccoon's mouth "thank you for saving my life". I still have the card sitting on our desk. I smile everytime I look at it.
