I Can't Watch Hospital Scenes

I haven't watched medical shows since Dr. Kildare!!! Much prefer legal shows like Law & Order.

These scenes are a stark reminder of the reality of our current environment. More needs to be done if these scenes are to ever go away. When I see these scenes, I get mad and motivated to do what I can to eliminate COVID in the United States.

I am assuming you are talking about the news coverage. I actually wish they would show more then maybe the people that think this is a hoax would realize what they are doing is harmful to others.

As a person who has spent lots of time in hospitals as a patient, I have very little desire to watch fictional shows and movies about medicine & health.

Regarding our current crisis, it is difficult to see what it going on. I saw a video where the doctor was explaining to a patient about intubation. She told the patient it was her best chance because her breathing hadn’t improved with other measures. The doctor was telling her what to expect during & after the procedure. Once the patient consented, a few other medical professionals entered the room and the video ended there.

I actually think it might help some of the “nonbelievers” if they watched some of this stuff. Maybe they need to see the bodies in the refrigerator trucks. Just horrible what is happening to people.

My sis is an RN and sent me a picture of her dressed in full protective gear ready to care for Covid patients. This was a few weeks ago. She and a friend posing together looking like they were going on a space walk.

It made me cry.

She knows about intibation as she does it on a fairly regular basis caring for critical heart patients. However, the Covid patients are another matter. She said few of their patients recovered as most had underlying conditions.

They were the hospitals that had refrigerated trucks on standby for the bodies.

She's in NJ, so the worst is behind them for the moment, but my heart aches for those workers doing battle every day. All I can offer is prayers.

I'm an retired RN, so I'm speaking from my RN feelings and my personality...

I don't know which the OP is referring too. TV fictional scenes, or news? However, I watch: comedies; reality; soaps;Hallmark type movies. the hosipital scenes in those are nothing intense. I do not watch local news- too upsetting; usually children or animals. I gave up dramas and intense -type of shows, years ago.

I need laughter, easygoing, some absurdity...life is too crazy, stressful at times for me to purposely watch more of it on tv.

But I do feel they should be showing Covid in the hospital, of course, with staff and patients' permission.

Most people think it's only pulmonary issues (which are horrific) it's not. There are strokes, organs failing, amputation of limbs, fingers, all body parts are affected, many of these concurrenty within the same patient, and long term too.

They should see and hear what is really happening, all of it, maybe they'll think about what they may be bringing home to their family, or the person in line behind them that may have a high risk person in their family.

Individuals CAN MAKE make a difference by speaking out to the Mayors and Governors of cities that do not mandate laws and continue to allow the congregation of people and groups of rioters and protesters who parade all around.

These people are spreading the virus wider than what people think.

Afterwards members of these groups who have been in contact will all individuals go about their activities. They go shopping et cetera. They are touching all things on grocery shelves and are in contact with individuals who they only have contact with in such settings. This again spreads the virus especially when they travel to other areas and states.

Not everyone wears a mask, nor social distance.

Think about the person who is preparing your take out food. Where was that person. He could have been in a group activity.

You can only control your habits but you can complain about the activities that are surrounding your neighborhoods. You can social distance in controlled environments. Even stores are becoming lacking in providing sterile wiping. Complain.

Covid is not going away and it is a reality. You can not blame Congress or anyone. A lot was done. Hospitals were built and equipment was purchased. Stimulus was given. People are dying and the Covid infected some more harshly than others. States did not comply on an even scale across the country due to Governors and Mayors.

Sometimes it feels as though we are all doomed by the virus and by the violence around us. The virus is not leaving and the violence will not be ending.

To answer the Thread Question, No. I do not watch medical shows or animal shows. Reality is too harsh and mean. I have cried so many tears.

The problem I see with states complying is most all did in the beginning of this. Then people got fed up with staying home, not working etc. So states with low numbers opened up. It was inevitable for more state to have more cases just due to spreading.

As for the protests I completely agree with you. I'm so fed up with people ignoring those spreaders and harping on people who wanted to go back to work or church or wanted to go on with daily life.

@chiclets It's being reported practically everyday the progress of the pharmaceutical companies who are making vaccines and it sounds very promising. I will take a covid19 vaccine every year if need be to avoid having a 10" plastic tube placed into my throat connected to a ventilator. We are healthy so far so we must be doing somehing right.....social distancing and wearing a mask.

These two statements contradict each other, @chiclets. The second might have been mitigated by a strong and unified front on the national level.

I think it's good to watch something like that once, so you know what is going on. If it affects you deeply, I don't think you need to torment yourself by forcing yourself to watch that kind of thing regularly.

I feel that way about animal cruelty videos too. I've seen them, I don't need to honor the lives of abused animals by watching all videos about them that cross my path. Same with videos of murders. If there's a timely reason to watch, I do. If not, I find out what is in the video so I can know that, but I don't watch the whole video. As long as I am inspired to act and stay inspired to act, that's what matters more in my opinion.

I think that watching too much outrage footage can lead a person to despair and inaction. And that is what the bad people want. That is why they are so heartless cruel in such a public way. To get us to give up and feel we can't do anything because so much is so wrong. Anything that combats giving up hope is so important right now.

So I don't watch a lot of videos of people suffering in ICUs and hospitals, no. And I've never been a fan of hospital dramas either. They feel very emotionally manipulative to me, swinging me from one emotion to another in a kind of queasy way.

I'm still unclear as to whether we're talking fiction or real life.

I think everyone but young children should watch a few narrated pictures of what is going on right now in ICUs across the country,

I saw one today that was from a hospital in the Rio Grande Valley. If watching that doesn't bring it home to you, nothing will.

I admire your sister. She deserves accolades for her work. You must be very proud and a little afraid for her. You didn't ask but I'd like to send her prayers for health and safety.

ME TOO! Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare. Now, no way. Ever since the AIDS beginning I cannot watch any medical themed movie or series.

I think maybe it is more upsetting in the South because this could have been prevented. Of course, the New York ones might have been prevented, but we didn't know it then.

I must confess that I watch a lot of Hospital scenes (?shows) and real life surgeries as much as I can. Not surprisingly, I am in the health field.

I just completed watching Lenox Hill on Netflix and really, really enjoyed it. I was especially fascinated by the neurosurgery team. I highly recommend the series.

If I were the squeamish type I couldn't watch these shows at all.

I don't watch any medical shows.

I have chronic health issues, so I'm at a doctor's appointment/office fairly regularly.

I've had enough medical tests/procedures that I generally don't like having them done, either.

That doesn't bother me. But, to have a relative in the hospital, makes me feel inadequate and so out of control in being able to help that person. I do not like that position.
