HS Grad. Gift Help

I'm at a loss. I'd like to get a graduation gift for a girl that just graduated and is going to college. I worked at the school and her mother and I became friends. I left 2 years ago when she was a sophomore. I don't know her tastes, likes, dislikes. I'd thought about earrings or a necklace but jewelry is so personal. They gave me a beautiful necklace when I left the school and moved west. My niece suggested a scarf but those too are personal and some don't like things like that around the neck. I don't.

Anyone buy a graduation gift this year and can help me out here. I'll have to mail it back east so it needs to be small, if possible. TIA

@Bridgegal A Visa gift card. All students can use these. No jewelry or wearing apparel, you don't know her taste. This way she can shop for herself.

Trying to buy a personal gift for an 18 year-old that you don't know is almost impossible! Besides, she most likely doesn't want anything but $$. Send a neutral gift card that she can use anywhere and be done with it! She'll appreciate it more than a scarf or earrings.

gift card, check, or cash.....always the best gift for a student going off to college. they can use it for things they need for a dorm room or for their classes.

@Bridgegal I attended a graduation party several weeks ago and gave the graduate a $50 bill. My friend purchased a gift card and paid a fee. Cash is always appreciated.

We give cash or a check, that way they can use it for what they need. We did this for a grad this spring & just received a lovely thank you from her. She used the cash for bedding.

I agree with everyone else, I would definitely send her a card and a check. It's easiest for you and I think that is what most graduates prefer anyway.

I had two granddaughters graduate from HS in June. All they really needed or wanted was cash. Visa gift cards have a fee, so I gave them each a check and they were happy. I may buy them something for their dorms when that is figured out. Send a check or a gift card and it will be perfect. If you do a gift card, do Amazon or Target. I am sure the young lady will love either.

Money is never a bad idea, especially when you don't really know the person or have any kind of relationship with them.

Like giving a gift to a stranger.

Agree with a check. We had two gifts this year, one high school and one college. It was hard because we actually knew more high school graduates, but this one is special. We sent a check to both.

I went online to Visa site, ordered a card to be sent. The couple of $ was worth it. GD can use for whatever. No checks to cash, no trips to the bank, easy for all of us.

My initial thought was a gift card for reasons stated by others. Something else came to mind though - a book that would help her in life. An easy read and one that offers insights into herself and others is "It's Just My Nature" by Carol Tuttle. Another option would be Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" or one of Gary Chapman's "The 5 Love Languages". You could also insert a bookmark with a check attached.

Hope that helps and it's nice of you to remember her and want to send something even though you don't know her well.
