I'm Shocked!

My small mountain community has frequently cancelled fireworks displays ( either because of bad fire conditions or rain ) so boy was I surprised when I checked that they are still scheduled.

People from areas whose fireworks have been cancelled will be streaming to your town. In their wake will be angry homeowners whose lawns get trampled and tons of trash. That's what happened at our swimming beach. It ended up having to be closed.

@patbz Rio Rancho is having their usual display. People can park at city hall 18ft apart to watch, although most can see them from their houses. Albuquerque cancelled theirs, also announced today that state fair is cancelled.

City of Phoenix has cancelled.....but many suburbs are having them......some charging $25 a carload. We are at high risk because of the dry weather.

We are in the red zone as well in Nova Scotia. No burning, restrictions everywhere. Unusual for us this early in the season. Our fireworks usually happen over the harbour to celebrate Canada Day so I am not sure what the status is of that event. Very dry here. Hoping for a rainy few days come Sunday. LM

Hi @Lilysmom I just came back in the house (3 a.m. here) from SOAKING my yard. I have HUGE pines and palms. They both can go off like bombs if they catch fire.

Our summer rainy season is late this year......the prevailing wind shifts to southerly ......and brings up the tropical weather from Mexico. Gross humidity(!)..........well, I can't really complain. I threw my snow shovel out 50 years ago. di

Our area has cancelled all public fireworks displays for July 4th, one at the beach, one in downtown district, etc.

They're always very crowded and social distancing will be impossible.

@Desertdi , wow, watering at 3 am. Dry is the new normal. A lot of wells have run dry in adjacent communities here although, thankfully, we have never had that issue. I remember drilling the well for my home. When the driller hit what he considered sufficient volume, my engineer father in law made him keep going about another 30 feet. For this I am thankful.

Rain expected tomorrow and intermittent through the week so that will help. We are parched. LM

@Desertdi : Several years ago the Apaches put on a laser show near our casino and I believe it was $20 a car. I like that idea and also that several places (not near me) put on shows using drones. I think that both of these alternatives make good sense (especially when there is a Fire danger).

Cancelled in Santa Fe too. Fine with me. I find them boring and they scare animals.

We don't have a fire danger here at this time, but the big fireworks show has been cancelled. Of course that probably means more people in the neighborhood will be doing fireworks. I feel so sorry for all the dogs in our neighborhood!

BAD NEWS---sales at firework stands are breaking records----(even though they are illegal in the city limits)---so that means people are just moving the celebrations to their homes---I doubt that social distancing or mask wearing will be in vogue and Co-Vid numbers will peak....And oh the poor pets that are terrified of fireworks....

There was a big discussion by our City Council after New Years Eve and all the firework complaints here. The non-emergency police couldnt keep up with all the firework complaints...So the city promised to beef up the task force and they even established a separate phone number to call to report fireworks....I cannot imagine whats going to happen on the 4th of July..... I feel sorry for those manning the phones and responding to the complaints.....

Not surprised at all about the online sales of dangerous fireworks either...... people dont seem to use common sense or dont flat give a darn....I just hope that the dangerous fireworks dont catch someones roof or house on fire.....

Or worse, @Spurt. I've posted before that when my daughter was quite young, she was struck with an illegal firework. She was unscathed but could have been seriously injured.
