Today show peice on Masks

The reporter coughed into a petri dish without a mask, then did the same thing, with a surgical, cloth and N 95 mask.

They let the dishes grow for a few days and as expected the unmasked face grew bacteria BUT there was nothing on any of the three masks. I found this fascinating

@I am still oxox that proves the point that masks are effective ! So really there was NO bacteria on the other dishes, meaning the different types of masks were equally effective? That's even more fascinating.

I wear handmade cloth masks.

I'm wondering whether the three masks were equally effective or that there was little-to-nothing to filter in the first place. The test is inconclusive for me.

No surprise here, I always thought mask wearing was a good idea. That was such nonsense saying not to wear them in the beginning. It was only because they were worried about the shortage of them for the hospitals. So the heck with everybody else?

I think it's the new norm for us now, we'll most likely always be wearing them in public at least. Better to be safe.

That sounds like a crude test of ONE DIRECTION. We already "knew," or had been told, that masks help contain our own germs and protect others. The critical question is whether any besides the N95 protect us from INHALING VIRUSES.

ETA that bacterial growth is one thing, this is a virus. Protection FROM INHALING THE VIRUS is all that matters to me; this is just silly handwaving.

They were trying to demonstrate the effectiveness of wearing a mask to prevent the spread of the virus, NOT which mask would be most beneficial to keep you from getting the virus.

I think mask wearing is an excellent idea.

But I'm not sure people should be taking the conclusion that any mask is just as good as the other. But yes, any mask is better than nothing.

Whatever comes out of a person's mouth coughing is not the same as the very small COVID-19 virus particles.

The CDC has said the N95 mask is designed to block 95% of very small particles, such as COVID-19 particles. I don't know the percentage of very small particles blocked by cloth masks. My guess is that experts know this answer, but don't want to discourage anyone from wearing any mask at all.

Still, any mask is better than none, in my opinion.

@Caaareful Shopper @ Hi. Well, they know that masks with pockets where you can insert a filter work much better than 2-layer masks. They work better at protecting others AND the wearer.

@D Kay Exactly. It has been said from Day 1 that masks are to protect others -- not oneself.

Bacteria isn't what we are so worried about, but a virus instead. Do they behave the same?

It's a crude test, but I think we all expect that a mask over our coughing face is going to protect others in some fashion.

I thought the big deal, since so many aren't wearing masks, is will the mask help ME at all as the wearer?

@IamMrsG The reporter coughed the same way without a mask on a petri dish, and there was a lot of bacteria. It was a very interesting report.
