Our numbers in SC were doing okay until the week before Memorial Day weekend. Now, numbers are in the hundreds every day and Myrtle Beach (among other cities) have been declared "hot spots".

Once they opened things up people arrived in droves because most of them were still under lockdown.

Some restaurants that reopened, are closed again because employees have tested positive

I have observed very little social distancing or mask wearing. It is out of control in my area.

@riley1 @Hi there. I just posted state by state comparisons. I could post S.C. County by county. When it comes to this virus, some places have low new case counts, some have high news case counts. I find it helpful to be realistic and to keep track. Lots of people are ostriches. If that comforts them, then let that be their way. For some, it's not that they prefer to be ostriches, they just have not had the opportunity to see the numbers laid out in writing and graphs to help them interpret trends in this situation. @Mindy D - I check the numbers in my state - especially in my area daily. Also, I check NY which is where my daughter lives with my 3 grands. And, she still has to go to work.

The county we are moving to has the same numbers as where we are in MD/DC. I asked DH (who is there now) what's going on and he said that area of our home, everyone is in masks and often gloves. However, in Tampa (where he works), no one he has seen is doing anything. Neighbors think that Tampa is seeing higher numbers due to the International Airport that is located there (same with BWI and Dullas in my area) as people fly in and out for the beaches/Disney, etc. Community pools are not opening so unless you have a private pool, no pools. Schools have no plans to open as of now either.

@FiddleDeeDee @One key reason for Tampas's stats is that their beaches were open and packed on a Memorial Day while MD AND BC beaches didn't open until after Memorial Day weekend.

@riley1 New York is in a class by themselves. Very sadly, my cousin, a teacher living in Staten Island, passed away from the virus. She also infected her husband. She was working from home but was asked to come in for a meeting. The teacher seated beside her was sick and gave her the virus. Her husband, my cousin, has recovered. Their teen kids did not contract the virus.

@Mindy D - My condolences on the loss of your cousin. My daughter lives in White Plains and works there as well. As she is a District Attorney, she covers a lot of the courts/precincts around the area. When you see trailer trucks parked around the morgue and tents in the local parks, you realize how bad it really is.

I agree, NY is a class of its own going through this. Imo, unless you are from the tri-state area (I'm a Jersey Gal), or know someone from there I don't think people realize exactly how bad it got.

Thankfully, a friend invited her to stay in their house. The kids can go for walks and they have a backyard to play in. I can't even imagine how bad it would have been living in an apt. in NY with 3 kids.

You obviously missed the amount of test almost double during this time. I have looked at the covid tracking website, and I don't see your reasoning.

@Hoovermom @Your point is well-taken. Your reasoning is good. We we're discussing the difference in the numbers between two Florida cities and their counties, Miami-Dade and Tampa, Pinellas County. There is some difference in numbers tested, with 242,000 tested in MD and 71,000 in Pinellas but there is also a difference in opening times for the two cities and their surrounding counties. Miami and Dade County did not open up during the holiday weekend but Tampa and surrounding areas did and the beaches and places were packed with people. Additionaly, there's another huge consideration to point out. Residents in MD County go back and forth between Broward County for work and all activities. The two counties are more like one giant county than two separate ones. Broward has had many tests too. Broward also did not reopen until after Memorial Day.

I would like to know where you confirmed the stats re: beaches in Tampa? Just curious as I have been to the beach & when the Governor spoke today this was not mentioned nor was it a factor. They said #s are different because previously 1) you needed to be of certain age to be tested 2) only those with symptoms were tested & 3) now any age or anyone can be tested. Now they are seeing higher #s in migrant & factory workers. Also, those who work in restaurants and bars.

I know our County has not been affected like Broward (Miami area). I didn't hear of "spike" in Pinellas. Although, I don't really follow it like others.

Also I didn't see the post but as others have said condolences on the passing of your cousin🌷

@FiddleDeeDee : Masks are not mandatory. I was at Clearwater Beach Friday and everyone seemed to be practicing "social distancing". I even saw a few older couples walking the beach with masks.

@homedecor1 You're correct, masks are not. My husband was joking about the difference between where we live (will be living as I and the rest of the children join him later this summer) and where he works (Tampa in a high rise on the bay). In our community, everyone is masked. In Tampa, he doesn't see any (none in his office).

Where I am now, masks are mandatory still.
