Things that make me go, Huh?

A family friend gave me a call asking me to think of her children to send referrals to as they are trying to 'drum up business.'

She has twins, a boy and a girl.

The son is now a business coach the daughter is a life coach. They have some sort of certification.

They are 23 or 24 (?), live at home, this is their first job.

I was speechless. I honestly did not know what to say. She thought since I worked with a lot of professionals and do volunteer work with people moving from jobs to careers that I could refer people to her children. ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I can not imagine PAYING a 20 something-year-old with no work experience, living at home for career or life coaching.

It's a head-scratcher!

I dont understand it either and I am not really sure was a business and life coach really is. If anyone wants to be told what to do, I can do that for free and I am really good at it. LOL.

That family friend certainly has nerve to make such a request of you. Her kids need to do it on their own, I doubt that they will have much success.

@Abrowneyegirl I would be honest and tell her that her children need to be out in the business world before they have the experience to be coaches. I have no idea how many years that would be; but, if I needed a coach for either, I would want a detailed resume and many references. The family is living in a dream world.

I know everyone needs to start somewhere, but having your folks drum up business for you doesn't seem like a good plan.

I'd say if an opportunity presents itself, I'll think of them. However, it seems to me that a coach should find their own clientele.

@Abrowneyegirl : are you in CA? I ask because my cousin went from being a RN to a Life Coach when she moved there!

A Business Coach and a Life Coach whose mommy is drumming up business leads for them?! I don't think so! Mom needs to give them both notice to find new places to live- I'll bet they will find work of some kind soon enough!

Working in an office 9 - 5 does not appeal to many college graduates. I found that out when my son graduated from college. Sitting at a desk all day and being told what to do by a boss was not on their wish list.

So many kids are trying to start out with jobs that they are their own boss and they pick and choose when they want to work.

A neighbor was a "party planner". If there was a big sporting event he would "plan the party". Not sure how successful he was - he moved and get this - to a bigger house. And he was 24 when he bought the house across the street from us.

I wish your family friend's kids well. And am sure they are going to learn some life lessons along the way.

I am going to add that if they need mom to make calls for them, they are much too immature to be coaching anyone or any business.

The only possibly constructive response I could give is to suggest they reach into their own bags of tricks and become their own clients. If they can figure out a way to help themselves in this challenging time, they can assist others. They should pool their resources. But relying on what is effectively a handout is no way to launch a business. Time to get creative, bootstrap, and hitch up those big girl/boy panties. Otherwise, Walmart is hiring.

Mom probably just wants them out of the house.

As many of you have said, anytime the parent is more interested or more vested than the child = bad news.

I did suggest perhaps they could do some volunteer work or volunteer to speak to groups to get some experience and get their names out there. She told me that they spent too much money on their programs to do free work. I was done at that point.

I did look into life and career coaches online and "oh My" talk about a hot field!!! Everybody and their dog is a coach of some sort! When think of a life coach I think of Tony Robbins. Now you can pay a few $$$ take an online course and bam you are a certified coach. LOL "Life coach by day, Uber driver by night" is on a lot of business cards I think.

I think it will be a looong time before these two are able to support themselves. I suspect they had lofty goals of earning big bucks, but it ain't gonna happen. I think they need a dose of reality.

They are 23 or 24 and this is their first job? What the heck have they been doing? It sure as heck didn't take 5 or 6 years to get a certificate!

This whole 'coach' nonsense is right up there with everyone being part of a 'team'... America likes to cloak everything in sports-speak... It's a head-shaker...
