QUESTION ABOUT FLORIDA AND COVID 19

Our governor here in Az has opened everything this week. If you live in Florida or any other state that has opened businesses and restaurants how are your numbers regarding COVID 19?

I am fearful this opening may blow this virus up. I hope not.

I live in Central Florida and we are "half" open. Regardless of the degree of "open" there won't be any significant change in numbers for 10-14 days.

Iowa has not peaked and has several hundred new cases every day in certain counties. Yesterday, almost everything opened that wasn't already open.

Because of covid concerns:

The legislature won't go back until June or later.
The state capital is not open.
The governor won't go out in public except for her trip to DC.
Schools may not open until January 2021.
Universities don't plan to open in the fall.
Doctors see patients with countless precautions and constraints.
Covid is rampant in meat packing plants but their CEOs sit in private inaccessible offices and homes.
The governor said unemployment claims are too high so people have to go back to work or lose benefits. There are just a few exceptions but they are difficult to meet.

So, really, how safe is it when the government and CEOs send people out but won't go out or open up themselves?

I'll know it's safe when the president, governors, congress, and state politicians are out glad-handing in crowds with their children and grandchildren right next to them.

One thing I found interesting regarding numbers in Florida (where my mom lives and I would like to visit) vs. Pennsylvania (where I live), Fl has roughly double the population of PA. However their Covid numbers are at least half including deaths...why?

I realize that PA got it sooner but it's now many weeks later than when the northeast first got it. Plus Fl has been less strict about social distancing that PA....just thought that this was interesting.

Flying however looks very dangerous to me and I won't be getting onto a plane for some time. I simply can't physically drive that long to get there to see her.

I don't think there was a spike in Florida. Georgia has been open for 3 weeks with no spike and that's really want you're looking for. You don't want a huge spike. This thing will be around for a long time but at this point people should have some idea how to stay safe. If you're very compromised stay home, if you're around people who are stay home as much as you can, etc.

Here in GA, opened since late April, we have trended down. In my county, we are down 55% with most surrounding counties also down.

Things are finally getting open here. Sadly many restaurants have gone out of business already and I suspect many more will. Buffets and salad bars will probably never happen again as too many have been made paranoid about touching things let alone be near anyone. I feel badly for those who have lost their jobs and are suffering financially. My younger son who is a chef up in central NY is out of work. Fortunately he has made some wise investment and could probaby retire, but he loves his work and wants to continue.

I hope no one on these forums has been hurt.

Whatever state we're in, there are going to be relatively safe places as well as identificable dangerous places. That's my take anyway.

Lots of Florida is open - come spend is the loud message. Quietly, occasionally you heard the governor remind that the vulnerable might want to limit themselves. Even if he hadn't said that, there's not a whole lot of anywhere I want to go that I used to.

So - if you're not poor and live or work in crowded conditions, if no one you encounter works in an indoor job where infection is more likely, you go places where others voluntarily observe the best recommendations of health officials and those places are mostly outdoors, you personally are as safe as you can make yourself before science finds a working vaccine and treatments.

With the openings so new, I don't think any statistics so far can tell us what the risks of it are - we don't even know the benefits much beyond the exuberance of those willing to wade into crowds. I'm willing to let them walk that plank ahead of me.

I do know one thing - getting the 3 closed counties in Florida open again is all about the money. The governor himself taught me that as he spoke recently. Economically it's a maybe in my mind - lots of that money comes from heavy tourist traffic, much of which is out of state and out of country. Y'all coming to Florida soon???

You would think population density would play a role, but a country like India with an incredible population density is relatively untouched with just 85,940 cases among 1.3 billion people. NJ has 143,905 cases with a population of just 8.9 million. India has 153 times as many people, but about half the cases of Covid-19. Why?

Even within NJ you find wild variations. My county only has 446 cases of Covid-19 despite being a major travel hub. Routes 295, 40, 49, the Turnpike all run through my county with route 55 either just in or just out of it. We have lots of diners, restaurants, hotels, motels, truck stops, but just 446 cases with 18 deaths. Hudson County has 17,237 cases with over a thousand dead. Hudson County has 676,061 people while my county has 62,607, so you would expect the numbers to be ten-fold higher, but Hudson County has 38 times more infected. Why? Are Hudson Countians just more reckless? More unlucky?

We're still in the early stages of understanding this virus. It feels like it's been around forever, but it's only been known for about 136 (or so) days. There's still lots more to learn about it. A lot of what we're seeing from the numbers, just don't add up though. Countries you'd expect to get hard hit by a pandemic are relatively untouched while some countries you'd expect to be able to handle things are getting crushed.

@Calcgirl I live in Phoenix and Gov Ducey has put us into Phase 2 which is not a total opening- it allows businesses to open only if they follow CDC guidelines and it is up to them if they wish to open- still many casinos will not open or movies theaters - if we peak with all of this he has said he will have to go back to stay at home orders- I myself do not trust these openings nor people- at this time I would not set foot in a casino or any enclosed space except grocery store- I do not believe the Cardinals will play with fans this season or any of the other sports here- its a mess and I think it is just too soon

In fact, there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases in Florida, and Palm Beach County is now considered a "hot spot" My recommendation is that everybody read trustworthy news sources and not rely on the opinions of people on the boards and elsewhere.

@Laura14Like every other state - lots of Florida is safe depending upon where you go and what you do.

Just in case you're searching for a new and different activity - I read in the local paper yesterday, you can rent an axe-throwing mobile trailer for $400 for 2 hours. They'll provide all the equipment + 2 employees and 6 or 8 people can then use it.

Yep, your right....things just don't add up with these numbers, one person said more testing needed, but another came out and said testing doesnt really mean a thing unless EVERYONE in the U.S. was tested....go figure (no pun intended).....

Even in NY it shows most of the people that caught the virus were staying at home....so that means other family members/friends must've brought it to them and why didnt the carriers get it?!?!?!?!? It's downright CRAZY!!!!

Our city opened up....our mayor was overrriden by the governor regarding masks...but stores are allowed to set their own rules.... We have 79 new cases but most of those were from the prisoners in jail....

I live in Florida, I am an RN and hyper-vigilant about this virus . I am at high risk and my brother is a extremely high risk and I am his caregiver. I think we will see a spike in cases. Florida has a Covid dashboard on the Florida Department of Health Website. I am going to try and paste it here. I staying in. I order food at wal mart pick-up, QVC, and Costco and that is it. We are not through this yet at least in my opinion. We had over 500 more new cases yesterday and there are many people who have not been tested. I pray for all of the people who have lost their income. I don't want to see people die.

since opening up, Texas has seen their numbers spike. On the covid site it says there are 1537 new cases.

There was a barber in upstate NY doing haircuts during the close orders, now he has the virus and infected a dozen of his customers.
