Pier 1 wants to close their remaining stores

According to CNN Business Pier 1 is asking bankruptcy court to close all their remaining stores. Home decor/furnishing market is really soft currently.

I think that stores like pier 1 have run their course. I call them Knick knack stores and I honestly don't ever go in there because I just don't care for those type items. Most things they sell, you can find at other stores, a lot of times, at much better prices. Nevertheless, I hate to see any store close because it means that someone has lost a job. Our economy is down the drain right now, hopefully sooner than later, we can get people back to work at full time.

It had a good run.

There's going to be a glut of available retail space by the time this is done. It makes me wonder what they're thinking in the offices of developers that are currently in the midst of projects to build even more space. One such project is down the road from me.

IMO, Pier 1 is the type of store I shop at when I move into a new home or redecorate my current home.
But in recent years, I could find the same decor at Homegoods or Target alot cheaper.

Even though the governor calls the 3 southern counties of Florida the engines for the state's economy, we had lots of empty retail space along the 2 main shopping boulevards even before the current crisis.

I can't begin to imagine what we're going to look like for the next 10 years. I rarely shopped the Pier 1 store near me, but I bought a neat chair there last fall - nothing else close in the area.

So sad - although I will end up spending far less money as local retail downsizes once again. I don't do "see it - want it" on the Internet the same way I do when things are right in front of me.

So sad. My husband and I loved Pier One, and went to the one near us often, however it is not surprising to me at all as our store was never crowded or busy except for Christmas time......Their 3 wick candles are really nice and they were usually 2 for 20 in their stores.....

I switched from shopping Pier 1 to World Market without even realizing I was doing it. The kinds of things I used to get at Pier 1 I have tended to look for at World Market instead. I think they were just outcompeted.

I hope they will continue on line. I have a store very close to me and most of my fall and Christmas decor came from Pier 1. Everything Valarie was replaced as was much of Hobby Lobby. I will miss the store very much.

Of course, that's a shame. Every now and then they come out with some sort of tshatshke that I simply must have. Just something cute, probably animal-related.

One favorite little thing I have is my birdie s&p shakers. I had seen them in an ad or something and told the husband about them, years ago, and he got them for me. I keep them on the back of the stove just because they are so cute and I love birdies. I've never put anything in them, though. ha! Their purpose is simply cuteness.

I am going to miss them. I loved browing in there. I found many things on sale. I'm glad HomeGoods opened a store near me last year.

Pier 1 Imports, which previously said it would close half of its fleet of stores, now plans to close all of its locations.

The retailer, based in Fort Worth, Texas, announced in a news release Tuesday that it was seeking bankruptcy court approval to begin an “orderly wind-down” when stores are able to reopen "following the government-mandated closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In January, Pier 1 said it planned to close up to 450 stores, or nearly half of its locations. It then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February.

Robert Riesbeck, Pier 1’s CEO and chief financial officer, said the company had been working to find a buyer to continue operating before the coronavirus.

Also if anyone has a Pier 1 gift card it would be good for 21 days from the time the store opened and would not work online, on day 22 it would lose all money on it.

Very sad to see retail take such a hit. They are now saying possibly 30-40 % of Pittsburgh restaurants will not reopen after Covid. Many people will have less to spend on many things. Count your blessings if this mess has not affected you financially.

Wow! This is really sad news.😟 I have always loved shopping there. Although some of the tight spaces, with all of the pretty breakables were sometimes a challenge to maneuver, I ALWAYS found something unique.

My heart bleeds for all of the employees, and their families. This is yet another, almost daily reminder of the collateral damage from COVID, and my thoughts and prayers of solace are with them. As another poster pointed out, I am truly counting my blessings!🙏💖

I expected this. They had shuttered many stores and were on their last leg before the big shut down and much like Lord and Taylor just aren't able to recover from being on the 'non-essential' list. Although they'd more or less lost touch with their roots, opened too many stores and more or less priced themselves out of business, I'll miss them. They had some really pretty things and Pier One had been around forever. There might be other 'import' stores out there, but I don't personally find them to be in quite the same niche as Pier One. If anything, they might be more of what Pier One started out being many years ago. It really is a shame when one contemplates all the many stores that have folded and what remains.
