It Was Like It Never Even Happened!!!

A friend told my sister what a great afternoon she and her mom had in visiting the charming Hill Country Towns...very few people out and about and what fun they had shopping, they did wear masks....plentiful parking....some new shops, but some shops remain closed for whatever reason.... So off me and my sister went....As Gov. Greg Abbott reopens the economy, he has urged Texans to wear masks in public to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.

We stopped at a couple of shops on the outskirts of town, shop keeper and shoppers mainted distance and everyone wore masks......LOTS of interesting merchandise...good prices.

One shop keeper told us she's concentrating on Made In The USA goods.....one was very picky if you were interested in an item she picked it up and gave you the price, if you wanted to buy it, she took to the counter....she was trying to limit people touching the merchandise and possibly spreading the virus.... Still, enjoyable shopping experience...

Headed into town on the main street and it was like the virus never happened....CROWDS, LOTS OF CROWDS -on narrow sidewalks. This is a tourist town, and it was at pre-pandemic shopping----we were about the only people that wore masks...some of the shops are small and difficult to manuever in but they opened anyway and squeezed people in--- no limit on the number of people that could come in and no distancing....we avoided those shops....When one girl sneezed didnt even try to cover her nose or sneeze into her sleeve....we gave up and came home...didnt feel comfortable....

Same thing in my city, with the nice weather everyone was out and about....there was traffic congestion and crowded parking lots everywhere....

I guess some people feel like its OKAY and we are back to normal......SMH!

We went to Petsmart they did have a sign posted everyone had to wear masks and maintain distances and everyone followed the rules--THANKFULLY!!!!

I went so long when this first started, going virtually nowhere, that when the 'new' rules went into effect for distancing, masks, one way aisles etc. I felt so uneasy going into a store the first time.

I can see me being just as uncomfortable with 'normal' when things open back up, when more people are around, and when we try to get back to whatever is going to be the new normal.

It felt odd then and it will feel odd to try and change back.

You are right, it is an adjustment....even slowly transitioning to normal....but people are jumping right into the last phase (there's a vaccine, and little or no virus) but we arent there yet....I can only hope that the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths dont skyrocket with people's carelessness...and the spike in cases wont be due to the excuse CDC gives that "more people are being tested". No, that's not it at all---its more like people are being careless and dont care anymore...

What I'm seeing is that people are just over it. And I get it, we all are. And I think that so many people can be 'good' on the short term, but really don't operate well having to make big sacrifices for long periods of time, and that is what this situation really really needs.

I've had long discussions with my husband about not getting complacent at work as this thing goes on and on. The company isn't really doing all it should, and I really know how easy it is, when no one is getting sick around you, to let your guard down, to push the limit a bit more over time. It's just human nature. We all just want to go back to what life was like on this date one year ago.

I think there is going to be big pockets of surges either within a month of most places opening, or in the later fall months because people are just not going to stay vigilant. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to eat those words and admit I was wrong. but only time will tell.

@SpurtWhat you are describing is pretty much what I've expected to happen as restrictions were lifted. The best part of those crowds you mention, of the lack of protective masks, etc. is that if there's virus and opening up is going to be dangerous, I'll know before I venture into my own new normal.

I'm hoping the people in those crowds prove that it could be safe. Might be - but I'll leave the details of my thinking to marinate in my own brain.

And this is how the virus spreads into the small towns where everyone is currently saying, "I live in a small town and there are hardly any cases right now. Surely we don't need to follow the same rules as the big cities." Then Typhoid Tim from Coronaville gets back from his vacation and drops in on your local craft fair...

Our neighbors who live across from us, they are very kind and sweet people, but they are having a party today. I bet there are 15-20 cars over there. The yard is full, the house is small. No way they can be social distancing.

I'm just not comfortable being around a bunch of people. I'd be a nervous wreck.

When I returned from my daily walk today, I somewhat jokingly told my husband that we're all doomed. I could almost feel the difference in the air as opposed to when we first went into stay at home mode.

It is a Saturday with gorgeous weather, so there's that. But people didn't seem as concerned anymore. I had a heck of a time avoiding close contact on my route that is supposedly less crowded.

We are not a patient nation. I think too many have just said "blank it, I'm taking my life back."

Too bad I'm not a praying person. I guess I'll just wish for the best for all of us.

ETA: Oh, and the traffic is picking up everywhere. I don't know where they are all going, but they are going.

Exactly! It's tragically unfortunate that there will be a lot of spreading from this sort of thing.

I hope everybody can stay safe! I wonder why some Americans are just so darn delicate that they cannot play by the rules for the greater good.

Hard to say....since we only visited the less crowded shops....but people did have shopping bags in hand from some of the stores....

I agree with you except for one point, that I AM a praying person ....Your totally right it looks like everyone is saying..."I'm so over this, time to move on....."

Oh and yes traffic, I went to Walgreens to pick up a prescription around 3:30 PM yesterday and it looked like just the NORMAL rush hour traffic.... I know some businesses were opening....but GEE didnt expect this!!! ......

Well I am fortunate to be able to stay home forever if need be. I'm not a senior yet but I do have asthma and Type 1 diabetes. I won't be leaving the house until I feel ok about doing so. Whatever others are doing no matter.
Being a Texan I know all those towns 😂

Exactly!!!! I've also heard that at least 72 of the protesters in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago have reportedly tested positive for Covid so far.

We decided to order from a local restaurant yesterday afternoon and went to pick it up. I couldn't believe how many cars were out! Parking lots were full at all the open businesses. We never even got out of the car. I had called in the order and the host brought the food to us. When I saw all those cars, I thought the same as the OP...it's like it never happened.
