Kids getting sick!

So scary for parents!

I saw earlier on the news about kids getting sick. This was found out in the UK but now it is here in the US.

Coronavirus could be tied to a rare but serious illness in children, UK doctors say,

In a statement sent over the weekend to medical professionals who look after critically ill children, PICS said "the cases have in common overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease with blood parameters consistent with severe Covid-19 in children. Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms have been a common feature as has cardiac inflammation."

Kawasaki disease, also known as Kawasaki syndrome, is a rare childhood illness that causes the walls of the blood vessels in the body to become inflamed.

The article says it COULD be linked with coronavirus and mentioned blood parameters. Really, talk about iffy.

Very scary news especially when you have 2 little grandchildren and their mom is an ICU nurse!! So far all are healthy. Let's hope and pray it stays that way. This virus has a new surprise for us every day...

More kids hospitalized in NYC with condition that could be linked to coronavirus

Officials said on Wednesday that the number of children who have been hospitalized in New York City with symptoms consistent with a rare disease possibly linked to the coronavirus has nearly quadrupled to 64. Omar Villafranca reports.

I've heard about this too.

Very frightening, and they don't know why some kids and not others, the same that they don't know why some adults do so poorly and or die with the virus and others don't.

I know they are learning and discovering things every day.

All over the world, they are trying to find treatments as fast as they can.

I hope they can help and save all those poor babies. Well, I wish adults too!

This is so sad. Now children. For the most part, we don't know who can give the virus to the child because we aren't doing enuf testing.

Four of the 15 children tested positive for COVID-19, and six tested positive for the coronavirus antibodies, signifying a previous infection.

@Still Raining As of now there are 64 cases in New York. The children have what appears to be Kawasaki, which is rare. The association between the condition and COVID is not very iffy because the children with the rash and inflammatory vascular symptoms either currently have COVID or have antibodies to it.

It's extremely irresponsible of the news media to post scare stories like this when there is no concrete proof that this illness is caused by coronavirus. Using hypotheticals only fuels even more panic. Every day I see another article about some bizarre symptom or other that researchers are desperately trying to link to COVID-19. There was story about a woman from Kazakhstan who was so overjoyed to be out of quarantine that on her first excursion out ot the house she went hiking and fell off a cliff while taking a selfie. I'm surprised that the authorities didn't link her death to COVID because, after all, she might have been more cautious if she hadn't been on lockdown due to the virus!

@Buffalogal47 I had not heard that story....very strange and sad!

I agree with you about the media. It seems that everyday they are trying to scare the daylights out of everyone not to mention giving people mental health issues with the constant worrying and anxiety!

Then there is CNN with the count of constant numbers...how many have it & how many have died. Why do we need to see that all the time?

I just can't watch much anymore.

@Buffalogal47 OTOH maybe it will serve as a wake up call for those who are dismissing this virus altogether. I remember back in early March when it was reported that "children don't seem to be affected" if at all by CV19. So I would see parents outside wearing masks with their children alongside them bouncing around maskless. I wondered to myself why the parents would take precautions and not think it's also important for their child not to mention these maskless kids possibly spreading the virus to others. With so much the experts DON'T know about the virus why wouldn't a parent (or anyone) errr on the side of caution? This is what I mean by using one's common sense and not blindly listening to what the authorities say to do.

Personally I would much rather know the latest about possibilities with this virus so I can use my common sense and proceed with caution.rather than to be in the dark defenseless.

Some of us want to be informed. We want to see the numbers daily on CNN. This sudden rise in a rare disease if not Covid related than what? Perhaps people will keep their children at home instead of out and about spreading virus.

People should be, if not frightened, concerned; there's a good reason. Those who aren't are ignoring the mandates and are responsible for spreading Covid far and wide.

I don't see it as irresponsible in the least. I see it as information. How people digest it is their issue. But to not have every possible theory or complication brought to light doesn't make me feel any more safe or comfortable. I'm an eyes wide open kind of person. I don't want to be hidden from the facts or the possibilities.

And from what I'm seeing when I go out this last week or so (mostly it is sitting in the car waiting outside a store while husband conducts some business, some people with kids need a good scare.

A month ago, parking lots and stores were empty. This past weekend, I sat in lots and watched whole families, some with infants so newborn you could tell by the cry, trucking into stores, no face masks, no coverings over the infants. Five and six little kids, running around like it's May 2019, not May 2020. The one grocery I did go in, kids running all over, bumping into people, touching whatever, parents oblivious.

So if news reports like this open some eyes to the possibility and changes some behavior, so be it.

I want to be informed too but not bombarded 24/7 with constant depressing information. The numbers count do not need to be on all the time. I personally can't take it and it sours my mood when seeing too much of it. I've been watching less.

@Deree There is nothing wrong with taking precautions when there is a definite risk. But this new development doesn't definitely link this new mystery illness to the virus, but rather to 2 other previously known extremely rare ailments in children. Researchers only suspect that it may be linked to COVID. So all the media is doing is freaking already freaked out people even more. That is irresponsible journalism.

Did these kids have any other underlying health issues or compromised immune systems? What other diseases do these children have antibodies for? COVID is more serious in people with underlying health conditions. These and the elderly account for most of the deaths and more serious cases. It would be very hard to prove that COVID causes Kawasaki in children or vice versa. Doctors need to do a lot more research before they start frightening people unnecessarily.
