@ECBG Thanks, I just sent this to my children. I was 12 years old in 1957. I remember some of these things. I bought a brand new sporty car in 1973 for $3,000. I wish I could have that car now.

A four bedroom house for $8000. Who can afford that? Wait, I see it has a half bath near the entry to the one car garage. Maybe if your mother gets a part-time job, we can buy it.

I remember many of them well....

I was 15 in 1957, the next year cigarettes and gas were both 25cents.

My mother would never allow me to see Gone With The Wind, and to this day I have never seen it!

I made $1 hr when I worked at the "dime store".

While pregnant with 1st child, watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

When first child was born in 1969 was able to grocery shop for $20/wk. We lived on the fumes of dimes...cooked everything from scratch, grew a vege garden, canned fruits and tomatoes, and baked all my breads...

@ECBG Thanks for sharing. What I found interesting you could substitute 2020 for some of them and we make the same comments but at hugh jump in cost. Some things never change.

I can remember asking my folks for a ride to a friends house and my dad saying "No. Gas is .39 cents a gallon!! Walking is free" and my mom said when they built the house I grew up in, she would have sleepless nights wondering if they could make the $99/mo payment.

My 1st full-time job (in 1974) was in the shipping department office of a large textile manufacturer...minimum wage then was $2.00. When I was put on as a "permanent" employee 3 months later, I got a $15 per week raise, for a grand total of $95 a week. I thought I was rich!

When my now-DH and I started dating, we could fill the tank of his '57 Buick LeSabre, go to the movies, then out for a burger--and still have change left over from a $10 bill.

I was 21 yrs old. In 1953 one kid had a car, a Studebaker. We all collected money for a gal of gas and came up with the ,25cents.

I brought a Vega in 1976 grand New for 4000.00.

My first home in 1961 for 5000.

the house I live in now 44 years, brought in 1976 for 39,950. Four bedrooms,kitchen, living room two baths, family room. No kidding.

In 1967 my first home was $ 15,000 it was a 920 sq ft home with one bath 4 bedrooms looking back the bedrooms didn't seem so small...guess they were. Our mortgage was 119@ mo with taxes and insurance, we were petrified we would make it. Groceries were about 12@ a week for 2. I remember chicken was 19 cents@lb And motel 6 really was six bucks. I remember when I went to work in 1969 it was 25@wk for babysitting twins. Expensive! I bought a 1969 VW square back, new off the lot for 1999. A Bug was about 900., but we wanted the big car lol, I was really blessed to live in those times and be able to remember a world without microwaves, huge grocery stores, cd's, fm radio, cell phones, and computers. We waited a week for a letter, paid bills with stamps, wrote checks, and I didn't have a MasterCard or visa till the mid 70's if you didn't have the money, you saved, or dreamed. There was always sears, or Montgomery wards for time pmts but that was for big things. I remember when wall to wall carpet was a big thing
