I Had To Chuckle Sending Check To IRS.

I mailed the $1,200.00, sent to me by mistake for my deceased husband, to the IRS this morning.

I was emailed instructions by a young man in my Senator's office.

I had to laugh that the IRS instructions on how and where to send the check included the word "immediately".

I thought to myself you guys are the ones that sent it to me by mistake and it took you 3 weeks to tell me what to do, now it's immmediately.

Anyway, it just made me laugh and shake my head. Gotta love em.

I've read many news articles today that these checks DO have to be returned, contrary to many initial 'reports'.

It's also now on the IRS website.

I don't understand why they just don't let people destroy the check. They would know if cashed. More bogging down over worked people.

@godi If you double paid someone (in a situation as impersonal as this), wouldn't you want the check back? Or would you prefer the cost of a "stop payment" or checking your account for months until the check became invalid?

@godi My money was diect deposited. I had to send them a personal check payable to U. S. Treasury with 2020EIP in the memo and DH's SS number.

Also I had to include a note as to why I was returing the money.

Also the address to where to mail it said to write it "exactly as it appears."

Very specific instructions and exactly why I just didn't send a check to the IRS.

I'm still wondering why they didn't just let me keep the money I "owe" them this year. They could have avoided printing and mailing that stimulus check. Would have saved us both the hassle.

Where is that check, by the way?

(It's in the mail...)

For the past 23 years my Senator's office for this part of Texas is down the hall from me. I just saw one of the people who run the office in the ladies room and told her about your post. Your right about the timing but we did chuckle usually I can just catch her in one of the stalls most days.

I'm sorry to hear any people who are not entitled to money under the stimulus act got money - whether it's the heir of a decresed or a huge corporation already floating in cash.

But I'm pleased the IRS is trying to claw back that money because the nation has millions of citizens already on food lines. As one of those paying, that's where I want my money to go - even during WWII rationing, I don't remember we went hungry.

We just got back from mailing the check for my MIL.. I saw that word immediately and thought, BS, LOL ... the IRS giveth and boy oh boy it wants their money back fast... hahahaha

It was really easy process on the website someone posted yesterday and thanks for that!

When the money was direct deposited we donated it all to our local food bank, Emcompass Ministries (Papa's Pantry) so it was a good thing all around..

and the upper right corner of the envelope has a box to check if the recipient is dead , and to return to sender

was this added recently ?

Funny, I saw on the IRS site, it says Do NOT call the IRS about this.

Q10. Does someone who has died qualify for the Payment? (added May 6, 2020)

A10. No. A Payment made to someone who died before receipt of the Payment should be returned to the IRS by following the instructions in the Q&A about repayments. Return the entire Payment unless the Payment was made to joint filers and one spouse had not died before receipt of the Payment, in which case, you only need to return the portion of the Payment made on account of the decedent. This amount will be $1,200 unless adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000.

Notice the question says added May 6th (yesterday for those who've stopped paying attention to what day it is. jk ) From what I'm reading in this thread it must have changed. I'll include a link :
