Other Issues as Worrisome as the Virus

Before I get jumped on I do totally understand the severity of the virus. But, I also think there are a lot of other serious consequences to be concerned about. Unemployment and not being able to feed your family. Mental health. And very importantly lots of serious health issues that are taking a back seat to the virus. Each and every one of these issues are very important to the person dealing with them. I will leave this post on that note. Wishing good health, physical and mental to everyone. I know what I'd like to see happen but I don't have a vote.

Unfortunately, all of the things you mention are in large part due to the virus. So they're not exactly separate issues.

I know what I would like to see happen, too, but I don't expect it will, certainly not in the foreseeable future, as I don't believe in magic.

The virus has certainly exacerbated problems in the areas mentioned by @Junebug54, but it's important to remember that they existed before and independently of the virus.

The virus has almost certainly exacerbated problems in these areas mentioned by @Junebug54, but it's important to remember that they existed before and independently of the virus.

Unemployment has skyrocketed, lines at food banks are at record levels, mental health professionals are seeing a lot of depression.

I didn't suggest that none of these issues existed prior to COVID-19, but it's impact is nothing short of enormous.

This in no way minimizes those who have struggled with other health issues prior to the pandemic. 65,000 people dead in the space of 2 months understandably takes up a lot of space in the room.

I know. My state is on lockdown now for another month & businesses in my area are closing their doors for good. Today I found out another cornerstone business of our community isn't reopening & the frustrated owners are moving out of state...I'm just stunned & have finally lost all my optimism.

Some issues have always been with us, but the number of domestic abuse and child abuse cases have risen rather dramatically where I live. Sadly, those least able to defend themselves take the brunt of anger, frustration and despair.

I have a friend who works in one of the corona hospitals. They just reopened a floor for non-corona. All spanking sanitized and ready for business. Can you imagine how these places got hit.

Everything you say is true. States have started to open up. Smart or not it's happening. And all the states live right on top of each other like 50 people in a banqueting hall. What happens to one could well happen to a lot of the others.

It's so simple though. Wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance. The most effective things we have against the virus. And nobody should say social distancing isn't possible because alll the states openiing up are doing it. Here's to happier days.

As you say, the issues below the line are consequences of COVID19. Meaning = result, outcome, effect of.

They are not separate entities floating about on their own, they result from our Poor Management of this virus on a National Level.

In my opinion, one must first of all be alive in order to benefit from the other things you mention.

This is NOT an either / or, all or / nothing decision. There are other quite sound alternatives. We are being pitted against one or the other, as if there are no other choices, for reasons of creating divisiveness, and discord, so we will argue against one another, rather than work together to fight this. Just watch it here.

If we did all work together more might ask

There's no national plan because each state is different. At this point each region in each state is different. You want the feds telling the entire country what to do? After another two weeks I don't even want my part of NY under the same rules as NYC.

I think each state has to do what makes sense for their state, in their own situation. We can all work together, but we don’t all have to have the same guidelines.

The decision to open is left to the states as it should be. I think some governors have overstepped, but I am not getting to that argument here.

Expect to see lots of lawsuits beng filed against "certain" governors and other state, city and local officials. Just heard that there are quite a few n the works. Some pretty serious stuff. Heads may roll.

@ALRATIBA I certainly hope so. Business owers being threatened when they open THEIR business so they can support their family only to be threatened by their local government, such as yanking their license to operate, taking their liquor license, it goes on and on....and on top of it all still must pay their local taxes...with what, they have NO MONEY! ridiculous.

Yes, this virus has caused more mayhem to me than I could have imagined.

My folks are old, daddy has copd and congestive heart failure. A neighbor has cancer, they are raising their grandchildren. They have asked my elderly, in bad health parents to keep these two grandkids 2-3 times a week while the grandma takes grandpa to the cancer place. I feel bad for the neighbors, but all of our family is staying away from my parents. I told my mom that if daddy gets this he will die. I have been so mad, I can't even go there. The children's mom left long ago, the dad is working out of state and he needs to get his self home, and take care of his kids. My parents and I have been into it.

Another friend is in the hospital, not related to covid that we know of. But he is in his 80's, and the hospital is not allowing any

visitors. And my heart is broke over that, I usually talk to him several times a week.

Its almost like this virus has caused a never ending series of some sort of earthquake and we are all effected by the ripples of it. If that makes sense.

And I know there are many people in worse situations than me. I am just feeling cranky and irritated tonight.

Just a reminder: According to the CDC, in the 2018/2019 flu season 647,000 were hospitalized and 61,200 died. The 2019/2020 season isn’t over yet. We’ve been through Spanish flu, Legionnaires disease, MRSA,SARS, Swine flu, etc,etc,etc. why is there no national plan in place? Is it because each illness is unique and a new challenge? Maybe. I’m just tired of the Monday morning quarterbacks who had no ideas at the time but are sure there to criticize after the fact. Not directed at anyone, just keep a perspective.

The issues we are experiencing from Covid--unemployment, mental health, and other medical needs are just TEMPORARY so that we may all stay alive and recover and have a fine future.

We have only been in this situation nationwide for less than two months!

Just think what life was like for Americans (like my grandparents) during the years of the Great Depression (ten years) when there were NO modern conveniences or social supports!

Just think what life was like for Americans (like my parents) during World War Two (almost five years) when war was on everyone's mind and men were gone from their homes in battle!

We need to have a bit of perspective and realize many other people in this world suffer terribly daily and we Americans are pretty well off and pretty lucky.

30 states have partially reopened for business even though this is contrary to CDC guidelines that specify 14 days of a downward number of cases before reopening. Testing remains woefully inadequate and there is little or no contact tracing of individuals who have tested positive for the virus. As a result, we may be looking at a second and much larger spike of infections, hospitalizations and deaths in the fall. We are all in this together and are doing the best that we can to save lives as well as the economy. Pretending that the coronavirus no longer exists is much worse than worrisome.

We can only get through this by following the advice of experts like Dr. Fauci. This virus is unique, contagious and deadly. The United Kingdom survived the Blitz during World War II, and we can survive a few months of quarantine. Every race, nationality and religion has faced possible annihilation and survived. We will not only conquer coronavirus, but based on what we've learned, we won't make the same mistakes, we'll be will be better prepared for future pandemics and we may be able to save the lives of our grandchildren when the next pandemic comes along.
