I read that the main ingredient in Pepcid, formatadine [sp?] is being trialed as a treatment for covid.

It's the poor man's treatment for upset stomach. In China, people who can choose, take Prilosec.

A US epidemiologist was in Wuhan during the height, and was interested in why older poor people died at a lower rate than older middle class people. He figured out it was the difference in antacid medicine.

So he came back, and it was kept secret while they accumulated intravenous formatadine to do the trial.

I bought Pepcid this morning. It's not entirely a dumb thing to do. I think the article is in Science.

Since Pepcid is my drug of choice, when I saw this on the news this AM I was interested. The study also used it in combination with another drug, so just chugging down handfuls isn't useful. And for heavens don't panic buy. Some of us use it.

Who knew? My husband and I both take Pepcid for GERD. I hope that famotidine can help those suffering from Covid-19. My best friend, who lives far from me, is showing signs of the virus...fever, chills and shaking. She was able to get tested and awaits results.

I hope health scientists continue to be creative and explore options. I also hope the reporting of these trials and experiments are not reported by politicians.

This is being tested now. It is administered in large doses through an IV, not what you can buy over the counter.

I use Pepcid on a daily basis it has worked well to control my reflux. Checked Amazon and there is very little available out there. I am glad my last purchase was of two bottles of 125 tablets each

I read a report on that last night

but it said it takes about 4 times the dose or something and it was given with the hydrocholor,,,whatever that drug is called as well (the one they are finding not so affective with serious side effects).

Before this it was quinine and zinc.

Now wonderingif high blood prssure drugs may make virus worse but not sure if its the drugs or the high bp.

Not sure if people with type A blood do worse but not enough studies.

All these things-I think they just are not sure about anything.

In a few days, I'm sure there will be no antacid drugs on the shelves.

It can hurt if too much is taken and with all drugs there are side effects.

All these things are interesting but I think I'm just as not sure about any of them as researchers are not sure of anything yet. But hopeful all this studying going on until they find something that works and for many different people, maybe several drugs and of course a vaccine.

@on the bay I hear you. I was infuenced by the anecdotal evidence cited in the article about the dr. who had his sister take OTC Pepcid and her fever broke. (If nobody else buys it I won't have hoarded, if that is what buying a bottle is). There was plenty on the shelf. ETA: Now that I think about it, Pepcid AC was completely gone. The only thing available was Pepcid Complete. That's just the drugstore I went to though.

At any rate, it will be a discussion.

A physcian was on our local Fox station this morning spoke on this topic. He said not to rush out and buy Pepcid as the amount that they are testing is much different than in this OTC medication.

He also stated that it would be administered interveniously in a much different dosage. I assume he was trying to clairify this news to avoid another Lysol debacle. Should be interesting though once the findings are available.

If someone needs it, it's available on Walmart's website. There's quite the variety...berry flavored, mint, tropical fruit, maximum strength, chewable, and plenty of generic as well.

I have no interest in it but looked out of curiosity.

Last time I went to the grocery store, and it's been a while now because we have been getting deliveries, there was a young mom there with her child. The kid was about 5 or so. They were shopping for peanut butter (among other things) and there were two left of the brand they wanted. The child told the mom to get both in case they wouldn't be able to get it again, but the mom said, "No, let's leave it in case someone else needs it."

If only people who are bent on hoarding could adopt that philosophy.

Please do not panic buy medication other people need to get through one day to the next. That's already happened with Plaquenil, a drug people with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis need to get through each day without pain.

The link you posted says doctors are using the medication "intravenously, at nine times the heartburn dose." You aren't going to accomplish the same thing by taking off the shelf tablets without a doctor's oversight.
