NO FOOD

I ordered 33 items through Instacart yesterday and received 5....this doesn't even begin to show the first sign of getting better, if you do find domething somewhere the cost has tripled it is starting to get to me since I'm almost 70, can't get out, retired and a widow. What are we suppose to do...should we start buying food on QVC because we can't get it in the grocery stores?

I am using instacart for the first time today, so my order should arrive soon. When do I know the items I get or not? Is it when it is delivered?

@josie - if you can't get out yourself, is there a neighbor or family who could go buy some groceries for you and leave them on your front steps?

Also, with Instacart, you might try having them shop at a different store and also ask them to keep in touch with you as they shop.

Could you order from Sams or Wal Mart? I don't think they deliver fresh things, but I have ordered different food stuffs from them and they deliver to my house thru ups. Canned veggies and fruit, granola bars, snacks is what I ordered. It would maybe get you thrut.

Also on my local fb page, there are a few people going out to buy elderly folks who cannot get out what they are needing for free of cost, you just pay for the items you want. If you are on fb you may want to check it out.

There has to be a way....Do you have any friends who are still going out who could maybe help you with what you are wanting?

If you need to you can go to different sites that sell food. Q is also a solution. Some shoppers are better than others. Some are young and this new to them. There is food.

No food, no Kleenex, no toilet paper, no cleaning products, no masks... Instead of our leaders at all levels rattling on and on about the medical aspects of the situation, which clearly they, nor the supposed medical experts, have a clue how to contain or eliminate, some of them really should, by now, have turned their attention to the fact that the population needs food and essentials. Whenever I see someone waxing eloquent about this great land of ours, I feel compelled to point out that no aspect of this crisis has been or is being handled at all well and in fact, others have done a better job. When something 'unprecedented' happens, we require creative solutions and we're not seeing any. We've essentially been relegated to living in a 3rd world country.

@josie Is there anyone you could call to shop for you or take you shopping for food??? A relative, a neighbor or someone from your church. Maybe there's a local community organization who will assist you. I hope that you can find someone to help you. In this time of a crisis I am hoping that you can find someone to help.

@stevieb Yes. A pandemic tends to level to playing field to what is normal life in the 3d world. Most of the 1st world has been shut down. And in Europe, countries are a lot smaller and populations not as scattered or as large as the US.

Nobody expected this or planned for it. No country that I am aware of was prepaired for it. So I think in light of everything our infrastructure is still at work--we have water, light, electricity and food and necessities, so in light of everything we are blessed.

Do we have what we want exactly? No. But we are trying to help those most affected, see that nobody starves, and for the most part pull together to get things done and food to people.

It is an unprecedented global disaster, and considering I am not going to seond guess anything.

Do you live in a medium or larger city? Is there an Elder Services agency, that can offer you guidance, to resources?

If you're in a smaller city/town, do you belong to a church, any type of senior group, that could help?
You might even try calling grocery stores, to see if they know of any volunteers that are shopping for folks who cannot get out. And, of course, please do not be too shy, embarrassed, etc., to ask for help, from family or friends.

I have an order coming today, from Walmart, hopefully, I'll get all or most of it. I also did an Instacart order, a couple of weeks ago. I got everything, but, the stores they shop here, are pricier, than, for instance, Walmart or Winco.

Also the Facebook suggestion, is a good one, Just yesterday, on my page, a local physical therapy clinic, posted their information to contact. They are shopping, free of charge, for people who cannot get out.

It might be location....I've used Instacart 3 times (I'm new to Instacart) and have received all items ordered. Sometimes a substitution needs to be made, but I've received all items.

The people I know who order food and household products online order from several different stores to get what they need.

To the OP: Since you are a senior, you might want to look into Meals on Wheels in your community. This program ensures seniors to do not go without food.

@josie I have been ordering from Walmart which is less than a mile from my house. I drive up there and they put the groceries in my car. I don't even have to get out. They also have delivery available for a small charge. They're so busy and the service is in such demand, I have to go online at midnight to get a pickup time. They're all filled by morning.

They are not particularly well stocked but I've gotten canned and frozen food and plenty of fresh produce (cheap asparagus). No eggs, not much meat (I got ham), I ordered TP from Amazon...no-name brand. We'll see how that goes; hasn't arrived yet. I'm picking up an order tomorrow and got one last week. I ordered about 30 items and got all but 3, bread, light bulb and some fruit preserves.

@josie Please call your local senior center if you have one, and your town or city hall. Someone should be there to help you, even if they are working from home. Tell them you need help with getting food, this is no time to be trying to get through a situation like this on your own.

That's what those people are there for, to help you. It just breaks my heart to think about seniors in your situation. Please call. Call your local Congressional representative's office too. They are working remotely.

There are shortages of medical supplies and medical needs.

There is a lack of food supply getting to the supermarkets.

There is a lack of good hygiene supplies.

There is a lack of helping the elderly. Meals on wheels are all but cancelled in most areas.

The stores advertise the items are available only in the store not for pick-up orders or orders online. When you get to the store at 6AM nothing is on the shelf.

Great, it is suggested we wear masks however the stores we would buy the supplies needed to make those masks are closed.

It is suggested we support take out restaurants. OK. What I am curious in knowing is if the Health Department is monitoring these places and making sure they are clean and using sanitary guidelines when preparing the food. Sure, anyone can wear gloves and masks but if they handle cash while using those gloves and then go back to preparing food, that is not clean handling of food. People are careless when no one can be seen watching them.

Try contacting town government offices for help and see how far that will get you.

We are going to have to survive with what we have. Now I envy those who really stocked up. I criticized them but now I do not.

IMHO, WE made some very bad choices about a many situations. SOME, a good many, events / facts we are now facing, as well as how to prepare for them were known and communicated. SADLY they were ignored, swift appropriate action was not taken.

But, Third world? No, I share your frustration, but sincerely, how many third world citizens sit in their own homes, and make idle conversation with strangers, using private computers?

Please call the non-emergency number of your local police department, or sheriff if you are truly in need of food. They will connect your local Human Services Department who can tell you about resources in your area.
