Buying face mask

I decided to try and find face masks so I could go to the store. I went to Walmart online thinking was get them from a creditable business but after a couple of weeks I sent an email to Walmart and this was an outside business selling under Walmart name. So guess what I got a small box that I paid 40.00 dollars for and it's from China and the writing on it is in Chinese. Buyer beware I wanted them from the US made in America masks,

@fresh kitty As long as you received them and if they are good quality for what you paid, what does it matter that they came from China? I guess I do not understand.

Unfortunately, I bought the same ones you did - from Walmart. I thought it was an American vendor, but it wasn't. Its just like eBay and Amazon. They portray themselves that way, but when you get the item, its from China. I bought a thermometer off of eBay and it was written in Chinese - and Celsius.

@fresh kitty lots of masks made in the USA on Etsy... I got mine from YayaLlama out of Nashville, TN.. very well made mask!

There is an experiment you can do with pleated surgical masks. Try to blow out a candle while wearing the mask. If it blows out easily you're getting (or giving) minimal protection from the mask. This refers to the disposable masks that come in a box, not homemade fabric masks.

I won't buy anything from Walmart unless it says it's shipped and sold from Walmart. It always tells you the name of the vendor, but there's no way to tell (as far as I can see) what country it's shipping from.

Just curious which you would choose if you had the option of getting masks from China or masks from New York City.

If you want masks made in the USA, you can buy them from sellers on Etsy. Make sure you check their location. A lot of sellers are from Eastern Europe and that will increase shipping time. You can also make your own.

The CDC has three different versions on their site, two that don't involve sewing, all made with items you may already have. They also show you how to wear a mask and how to clean masks. Here's the link: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

You can do that until you can get your hands on a better mask.

I just recieved 100 face masks that cost me $89 from Walmart.I was shocked that they were made in China!!

However, they are so scarce these days.Atleast I got them.

@Suziepeach - thanks. I just ordered from one her also. I've been ordering on Etsy from themagicspool and beaudindesigns. Beaudin Designs is located in Woodstock.

Yes you need to be careful when shopping online Amazon isn't the only one allowing individual vendors on their sites - Walmart, Target, Best Buy are all websites I have noticed that items are sold from other companies. When you look at the item it tells you on the bottom of the description that the item is sold thru X retailer. Buyer beware. I learned the hard way with Amazon years ago. Unfortunately which these external retailers if you make the purchase then realize your mistake you can't cancel right away you are stuck.

I went to Facebook and searched on "face masks" and found a group dedicated to making and selling them. Plenty of American made and mainly cost effective handmade.

that's exactly what I do--when I am on the Wal Mart web site and want to purchase something I always only buy if it is sold and shipped from Wal Mart--it makes it easier to return to the store--no problem there--and I don't trust some of those vendors on the Wal Mart site--who knows where they are from------------------marynj
