I'm Downgrading My Cell Phone

My smart phone stopped working, so I needed to get a new cell phone.

Thing is, I rarely use my cell phone. It was mostly in case of emergencies, or a power outage.

So, I decided to go back to an old fashioned flip phone.

Plus, I'll be saving money on my monthly phone bill.

I'm not knocking smart phones. They are nice, but if you're not really using it, is it worth the money?

So what's old is new again.

@Anonymous032819 I'm with you. I have a plain old flip phone that sits in my purse and rarely is used. My DD offered to buy me a smart phone but why? My purse is already smart enough lol.

My brother in law only had an old style flip phone. He recently upgraded to a newer style flip phone. He does not own a personal computer. He never had an email. So he never purchased anything online. He doesn't exist online.

I posted in another thread that I hope "smart phones" do not become mandatory for simple, everyday things like buying groceries. I use my "stupid" flip phone very infrequently so I don't see the point of spending a lot on one. I pay AT&T $25 every 3 months and that's more than enough for me.

I keep an older phone in my purse just for emergency only, have not used it in several years. No need for a phone attached to my hip or anywhere else. My DH adds me on to his plan from Consumer Cellular for next to nothing.

My iPhone is my little PC. I don’t even own an iPad and since completing nursing school I barely use my laptop. I do everything on my phone - calls, texts, internet. I have a ton of apps on it, including Instacart, telemedicine with my surgeon, Amazon. It’s actually the one appliance or electronic device I can’t do without.

I love my Samsung 9. It's a small computer. I use it often when I watch tv but if I have something to do or order something, I prefer the rather large screen on our desk top.

I also type faster than I text. Never could get how people could text with two thumbs!

I'm with you. I use my Samsung phone to call, & buy things. I still use my home computer, but more and more, my smart phone. I started out with a flip phone when I got a job at a university. I still remember all the kids talking on the flip phones. Then smart phones moved in. Kids no longer talked. Communicate with the their thumbs instead. It influenced me to move to a smart phone in 2013. Never looked back. Still call mostly and talk, rarely text. Faster and easier just to talk. But only recently started purchases on the smart phone. Before I used my home computer. Just opened an app for No Contact Papa Johns. Order on smart phone, includes tip. Drover puts pizza on clean surface & rings doorbell. He stands 6 feet away from you. You pick up pizza. Amazing!

Since my laptop died, (that's a future purchase) I have been using my Kindle, which I can do pretty much everything that I did on my laptop, shop, pay bills, taxes, watch YouTube, post here.

Just thinking back, I was an early cell phone user. My first one was back late 1980s! It was like a brick and weighed as much as one!

I have had a flip phone since 2000. When my original phone died I replaced it with another flip phone and have been very satisfied with my service.

My first cell phone was in 95 when my parents got very sick and I had to have a way the convalescent center could get in touch with me immediately. Worked well and my second one was a flip phone (Motorola) which was an extremely good phone.

But once my son came home with an iPhone3, I was hooked hard! I love real time electronics and when I jumped on the iPhone4, it had me at my first app!! I'm up to a 6Plus (and love it) and will probably get one that has a hugely better camara as I do a lot of selling on eBay. The eBay app allows me to deal with customers no matter where I am and the ability to research is phenomenal! I have news channel apps, local weather app and even a COVID alert to my area (Weather app). I even have books downloaded.... LOL... and yes, I make and take phone calls too!

But I agree, if all you want to do is take phone calls or make them, there's no sense in having one....

I don't blame you @Anonymous032819. I periodically reflect upon the subscription services to determine whether or not I want to continue. If you're not using the service, it certainly makes sense to cancel it.

I can't imagine not having my Samsung S10. I use it for everything. It's great when I want to do a quick google without having to use my laptop.

@Shelbelle - Are you and your husband satisfied with Consumer Cellular? I have been thinking about switching my service from Verizon to CC (I have a Samsung Galaxy 5). I text only a few times a month and rarely use it for data. Basically just use it for calling, but that is only when I am out. We still have a LAN line and I have my laptop. I think I am paying too much every month considering how little I use it.

Years ago I bought a TracFone and have bought many since. Rarely use them so I've accumulated thousands of minutes since they come with free minutes. I now have a nice smart phone which comes in handy often for its internet access. I pay $50/yr for service and that's the extent of my cell phone expense. This is my third year for using the same phone., which cost less than $80.
