Have You Had To Upgrade Your Phone?

My cell phone is about 6 or 7 yrs. old. I get a phone card every 3 months and add minutes. DD said it's a smartphone. It's just a phone to me.

I don't have a data plan, never did, just use it for an occasional call or text.

I had to add minutes in March. Today I tried to call DD and tell her I was on my home from grocery store.

I have no service it says my phone isn't compatible. Just to make calls?

They can bite me. If it wasn't going to be compatible why let me add minutes a month ago. I have minutes in the 4 figure range.

Yes, I bought a new phone right before Best Buy shuttered it's entrance. And it needed a new SIM (?) card that they didn't carry.

So I spent hundreds of dollars on a phone I can't use. My old one (3 years?) has a cracked screen and the power can go from *fully charged* to 4% in a flash. Something's wrong at the power adapter part of my phone. Ugh.

I don't use my cell phone for texting, tbh. I'm a home phone talker for the most part. Hate talking on a cell except in the car.

Best Buy did send out an email before they closed saying they would honor an extended return policy. I may get another phone that I can get the SIM card from them.

I had to get a new phone after 3 years with my Iphone. Ended up buying Samsung this time. Iphones are way too expensive, the Iphone I got 3 years ago was a free deal on verizon. I actually like this Samsung even better

Agreed! I keep telling my husband that iPhones are over priced and under perform. My friend lives in Florida, and has a Samsung. When I talk to her (on my land line), it sounds like she's in the next room - nice and clear. When I talk to my husband on his iPhone, he sounds like he's in Europe! The cameras on the Samsungs are awesome!

I have always had a Samsung. Love them. The best in sound and in cameras. I have a Samsung 9 currentlyy. Got it when it came out.

YES the camera on this samsung is awesome and i like the extra light feature for pics outdoors and nighttime! The sound quality for calls is excellent!

@CrazyKittyLvr2, your carrier should have notified you about the date they were closing of 3G or older access. Different carriers have different cut off dates for phasing out/ending older technologies. You need a phone that is LTE compatible.

A couple of months ago, I think it was, there were several discussions on the board about the need to have older phones replaced.

Mine is a Samsung. I view my phone like I do my jumper cables, mylar blanket and the thingy that breaks windows if your trapped. It's stuff I might need in an emergency.

I only got it because I was traveling a lot to see my Mom when she was sick. It's 4 hrs. round trip and I would leave work a couple hours early, visit with her and drive back at 9 or 10 at night. I'd call my family when I left and they knew if I wasn't home in 2hrs. come find me. Mom was having fits so I got the darn phone.

In this current situation, people not going to work, everyone on the internet it could be just a temporary problem. In my case when a call wouldn't go through, a text will, (cell tower damaged by tornado)

You should have gotten a notice if your phone wasnt going to be compatible with the new 5G networks.....One of my phones is going to be disconnected...its very old and I use it as a backup, and yes they'll still let you add minutes but my data is gone and I refuse to refill, the service is up in May and thats when Ill disconnect it, like I said its a backup when my main phone needs to be rechrged........

But my other cell thats a couple years old is a Samsung and the model is still compatible, but I bought another Tracfone just in case.....

Whats funny too.....if I am traveling out in the state in rural areas, my friends with their fancy iphones cant even get a signal....but with my Samsung Tracfone Im good to go....with a loud and clear signal....

I have a "stupid" flip phone that I've had for years. Serves its purpose. I can text but it is slow. But I only pay $25 every 3 months with AT&T. Works for me. DH wants me to get a smartphone but I see no purpose to it. Got along 70 years without one. I'm just hoping smartphones won't be "required" to do basic things like grocery shopping, getting on public transportation, etc.

@kaydee50, we surely are moving in that direction. In many respects to get coupons or special prices/offers using a phone app is already the only way,

DH and I just updated our phones last week. The mother board went on his phone. We both upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S10. We had the S7.

I hate getting a new phone. It takes a minute to get acclimated.

We upgraded my husbands cell phone last year.

He carries a cell phone when he leaves home, because I insist; his interest in a phone is less than zero.

At the time, Verizon still offered a flip phone, and even tho it’s a smart phone, it is easy for my husband to use to call home, or answer my calls. He has no idea how to find his contact list, how to take pictures with it, or get a text, and does not want to learn anything about it.

Same here! DH and I have been using the "stupid" flip phones for years. People make fun of us as we are the only ones we know who still use these! We are concerned that we will be forced into getting smartphones to do required basic things as you have written and at a much greater cost to us.

We will never get Iphones as we feel the price for these is just truly ridiculous and we could never afford them any way. I have a friend that calls me regularly using her Iphone and I cannot hear her at all! I constantly tell her ---please speak up, please speak up. The reception is just terrible. She says --- I can't figure out why you can't hear me--- I spend a fortune on this phone! And she only lives like 40 minutes away!!!!
