Robert F. Kennedy's granddaughter and her son missing after canoeing accident in Maryland

The grandson and adult daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the oldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, are missing after the pair's canoe apparently capsized in the Chesapeake Bay on Thursday, authorities said.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, and her 8-year-old son Gideon were canoeing in Anne Arundel, Maryland, Gov. Larry Hogan told reporters on Friday, adding that the search was ongoing.

This poor family has endured tremendous loss. I pray there will be a miracle for the Kennedy's this time.

The last few days here in Maryland have been very windy with occasional gusts. It must have been even more so on the Chesapeake Bay. It would not have been a good decision to go out on the bay in a canoe with a small child.

I hope they are found but at this point, I believe it is thought that they drowned.

It is such a tragedy for the family, yet again.

@Mersha From what I just read on CNN, children playing on the lawn kicked a ball into the water. She and her son 'popped' into a canoe to fetch the ball. They didn't go canoeing per se.

@Kachina624 Thanks for the info, I had not heard that part.

I just got in from stopping at a local farmer's market and the wind was really bad. When that happens here, usually the Chesapeake Bay is worse.

Even if the canoe was just taken out for the ball fetch, if a strong gust caught them, it would be hard to control.

So sad.

Oh my gosh that is awful. I just read that Maryland Natural Resources police said that "an overturned canoe matching the description of the one went missing was recovered."

That water must have been very choppy as windy as it has been.

I am afraid to go out into the Bay or any water around here unless it is like glass. I've done it before, but ONLY with a life jacket.

It's heartbreaking to know a quick, innocent decision to retrieve a ball could end like this. So very sad for the family.

Kind of weird that they both disappeared. You'd think that even if the worst happened happened to them, they'd still be findable because they'd be wearing life vests.

I am not sure which one is more frightening to deal with, a choppy bay or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

It was such a tragic accident.

Maybe she went to rescue the son who had gone after the ball. That might explain the haste. That poor family.

We've actually done something like this, but on Lake Huron and it was a beautiful day. One of the little ones dropped her beach ball in the water and it started floating away. Several of the neighbors jumped into their boats and one of them retrieved it. It was a lot of fun and the little girl was jumping up and down. Still puts a smile on my face to think of it.

So sorry to hear that their day was tragic.
