NY State Cancels Regents Exams

This is a major thing, ifyou great up in NY you will understand, till this day the sight of a Regents review books gives me shivers

I remember when they were cancelled in the early 70s due to the exams being stolen. I was just a bit too young, but my husband and sisters lucked out that year.

I was glad I grew up in NJ. When I moved to NY was the first time I heard of Regents. Happy we didn’t have them. I do not like tests.

I grew up in NY. The Regents exams were the capstone of your education. You got a "Regents Diploma" when you graduated. When I took them, they were real examinations. Today, they're a shadow of the past. They've been so dumbed-down to meet "diversity standards" that they're practically meaningless.

Lots of exams being cancelled. Here there will be no final exams. I was reading that some districts here are saying the 4th quarter grade can't be lower than the 3rd quarter grade, so students can literally do nothing during this eLearning time and get the same grade they got at the end of Q3. Our district is "encouraging" participation grades, so it's crazy how much higher students' averages are now compared to where they were before eLearning. It's apparent some of these students are getting help from others before submitting their assignments. Because grades are drastically improving during eLearning, I wouldn't be surprised if people started demanding more of it. I heard that some districts aren't even recording grades for eLearning while others are like mine and encouraging participation grades (they get 100 just for turning something in--accuracy doesn't matter).

On a similar note, I heard that college students majoring in education aren't able to take the Praxis tests. Here in South Carolina it seems they will be waiving Praxis tests for new teachers for next year with the understanding they submit transcripts, references, and pass the Praxis within their first year of teaching.

@wildcat fanI can't imagine how any new grades would have value at this point. It's hard enough to assign some grades, but given all the variables with a hastily thrown together system for hundreds of thousands of home learners - just what would that grade mean anyway?

@Cats3000 I grew up in upstate NY. You are right about the Regents having significant importance.....they were to be feared. So sorry to hear they are not what they use to be.

@millieshops Oh, it's a big deal now that we're having to put in participation grades and they've figured out they can get help on quizzes and tests (unlike how it would have been if they were in a traditional classroom setting). Honors students must have 80% or higher in order to be automatically enrolled in honors courses next year. All those C's and D's are now B's. The F's are now passing. Around here eLearning has become a way to push them through without summer school, but some districts aren't recording any grades at all during this time.

Doing well on the Regents exams was a symbol of accomplishment and honor - and in my day, we didn't have tutors helping us - we did it the old fashioned way - by studying hard.

It's a shame they won't be given this year.

Grew up in NY and was a teacher for more than 34 years. The Regents exams of recent decades can't even compare to those of the 60's and 70's. If you ever get a chance, look at an example of a World History Regents of the past and compare it to a Global Regents from now. The ones from the past tested knowledge and required students to be highly skilled. Today's versions are watered down in a way to allow everyone to pass them. These changes came about when we decided everyone should go to college. Don't get me wrong, everyone should have the opportunity to go to college, but that doesn't mean everyone should go to college. If you got a Regents diploma in the past, it said something about the kind of student you were. That's not necessarily true today. In fact, the more advanced students today are all enrolled in AP classes which didn't exist in the 60's and 70's. I also want to say that many of the students from those decades who didn't get a Regents Diploma often went into the trades and MANY did very well. A few of my friends from the past started businesses (plumbing, electrician, glazier) and made more money than I ever did as a teacher.

Some of my non-regents friends ended up in community college, and did great and then transferred to a 4 year college. Some of my fellow regents grads didn't amount to much, and bombed out at college. Also in my opinion a good plumber is worth their weight in gold.

Georgia schools canceled Milestone Exams a while ago. They're taken every year but must pass 5th and 8th grade to be promoted.

Obviously all the exemplary students old school successful Regents you all are claiming to be the "none dumbed downed people" are not very helpful in solving this devastating New York crisis. It the test is worthless tax dollars should not be wasted on it.
