If someone is on Social Security Disability.....

will they need to fill out a 1040 form in order to receive the 2020 stimulus check? If so, can that be done online? How would you actually submit the form if you fill it out online? Thank you.

You can go to the IRS dot Gov website and fill out one of their FREE filing options and then submit it on line. Free.

My understanding is this. I am assumming that your cheques are direct deposit. The govt has the information and money will be deposited into our account.

@noodleann I read somewhere in the NY Times that this is a "loan" and not a gift and the amount will have to be reported on next year's income tax. Have seen no confirmation of this anywhere.

You don't have to "file" anything. The payment will be automatic.

I heard the exact opposite. That the amount is non-taxable. And that, if you weren't eligible last year, but become eligible this year, it may be a credit on your next years tax return. This was from the finance reporter on my morning news, responding to viewers' questions.

No, I'd have to file, according to what's in the link to the IRS website, meaning I won't get it if I don't submit something. So will anyone else on SS or SSDI who didn't file taxes for 2018 or 2019, from what I read. Not doing that so no problem for me, now or down the road, at least with respect to that.

@kaydee50, one of our U.S. senators said that the checks are exempt from both federal and state income taxes. Governor has verified no there will be no state income tax on the funds.

According to https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/economic-impact-payments-what-you-need-to-know , the form is not yet availble. Check the IRS site for updates so you can get correct information directly from the source.

I wouldn't trust anything at this point. Reporters are saying different things. Wait till the money starts flowing, IF that happens, and then we'll all know what's going on because it'll be happening and there will be something real to look at. And what happens next year will be decided next year. I certainly would not put any stock in any assurance that these jokers are making now, because in 2021, everything will be different and if they can claw back anything from us, they will.

The check is a stimulus, it's mean to boost the economy.

It doesn't matter where your "salary" comes from, it's irrelevant.

@DiAnne Folks who are STILL working AND getting paychecks will be getting stimulus $$$ as well as their children (under the age of 17)!

So you are saying that if you are getting a Social Security check the government is giving us the SS check. I worked fifty years and earned it. The government is not giving me anything.

Where in heavens name you got the idea that government was giving me money. I am aware of the category the government calls SS, but! I see it listed under "entitlements". Really, getting back your own money an "entitlement"? Only the politicals see it as such. I see it as the government borrowing my money, without interest, not as a gift.

Money was taken out of every one of my paychecks for many decades and for some strange reason I always thought that was my money. It originally was supposed to be used for those that paid into it for their retirement. That soon ended and it became kind of a "go to money pot" to use for, who knows what.

Giving me money? Sorry to me that is a non funny joke!

The government isn't "giving" us money, it's PAYING OUT funds DEPOSITED from OUR EARNINGS over our working lifetimes. We earned it, they banked it, and now they're paying out. (I'm referring to Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance, not SSI.) It's not an entitlement--not that you used that term--if you earned it, it's an earned benefit. Having paid the employee AND employer share through much of my working life, I am glad to have those funds now.
