28 Spring Break Students Test Positive

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Public Health is investigating a large group of people with a cluster of positive COVID-19 cases returning from a Spring Break trip to Mexico, the agency said Tuesday.

APH says about a week-and-a-half ago, the group comprised of approximately 70 adults in their 20s left for a spring break trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Currently, 28 of the 70 have tested positive for COVID-19, and more of them are under public health investigation. The University of Texas at Austin confirmed all 28 people who tested positive were UT students.

I just feel sorry for the other residents of Austin whose exposure to the virus has now increased because of these idiots.

I feel sorry for a lot of young adults whose parents didn't teach them that there are dangers, they will need to work most likely to live well, and that you have to look out for yourself. They deserved better parents.

Exactly! They don't seem to think/care about whatever happens with their irresponsibility. But they are spreading it to others and that is unconscionable. This kind of behavior will affect this probably by hundreds fold.

I'm of the belief that you can do whatever you want with your own body. If you want to kill yourself, you have that right. But you do NOT have the right to irresponsibly cause illness and death of others by your own stupid behavior. This angers me to the nth degree.

Yes! Can remember "a few" irresponsible things I did at that age.

and when these kids were enjoying spring break, my 66 year old brother just had to go skiing, since he heard it was going to be the last ski day of the abbreviated season

And may I add that, beyond exposing people, these irresponsible individuals who are sick now will use tests, medical attention, medicines and possibly hospital beds and life saving equipment that truly innocent victims and first responder heroes need? To me, that is the gross injustice of their self-centered choices.

I'm with you @chickenbutt, this angers me.

The governor of Florida should have shut the beaches in the entire state like other governors did. He was more interested in the revenue from the hotels and bars than his citizens lives.

The governor of Louisiana also ignored the doctors recommedations to issue stay at home orders and let Mardis Gras go forward.

Louisiana's numbers have spiked to ridiculous levels and they havent even peaked yet.

Federal government should have issued a country wide stay home order but the same reason was used. They didnt want to scare people or the stock market and many people got sick and have died as a result of us being reactive rather than proactive

I am so surprised that so many here attended the SC rally and heard the word *hoax* ~~and ran with it~~.

That said, ironic that NYS governor names a law after his own mother and yet his little brother (not spring break-er age) ignores the warnings and brings his elderly mother into his home.

Now he tests positive.

I wonder if he was at the rally and took the word out of context, too?

It's not only the younger ones who are being stupid ....

Your information regarding the Governor of Louisiana and Mardi Gras is completely untrue. There were no recommendations to issue stay at home orders from anyone at that point in time.

The Mardi Gras season began on February 8 and ended on February 25. As of that date, there were a total of 15 cases on the west coast, all in people who had returned to the US from abroad. The first case of community spread Coronavirus was identified the day after Mardi Gras - in California. No one in the US was shutting anything down at that point. Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana did not hesitate to shut down the state once those recommendations were made. We were actually one of the earlier states to shut down. Please get your facts straight before you decide to trash someone.
