Stimulus check question

Does anyone know if retired senior citizens will receive a check? In the beginning discussions they talked about the need but lately it seems they are saying working people. Thanks!

Why would retired people get a check? How have we been affected by loss of anything.

The final bill language is not available yet, but according to the draft, the answer is yes. It is based on income as filed - social security counts as income.

Pensions, stocks, etc. They want to stimulate the economy. Plus, it's the most active voting population and most at risk. Some seniors also have part-time gigs heavily affected.

I won't get anything as I'm single and make over $75,000. I'm ok with this as I still have my job and full benefits.

@Mmsfoxxie : My friend last year had to retire before she planned to because of health issues. She worked less than 5 years with the company and no retirement. Her disability social security check is small but the small increase this year made her ineligible for food stamps. Thankfully her house is paid for but she has property taxes and other expenses for a house. She has a car payment for a very old small car. Her health issues keep her at home. After she pays bills the remaining month and little money left is very long trying to purchase food and other necessities. Being retired does not indicate you have enough money and don't need help. So many people need help. I count my Blessings everyday. Southern Bee

It's based on income not age.Some seniors make a lot of money & some don't.

@SouthernBee, so sorry about your friend! My pension is small but thank God I have one. As long as my husband is alive, I'll be fine. He was retired already when we got married, so I won't be getting anything from him.

There are so many people barely making it and I guess the stimulus will help but long term help would be more beneficial. I'm fine now but one big medical issue can change that. Good luck to your friend.

@Mmsfoxxie : Glad to know that you and DH are provided for. I understand the need for a more long term help. Talked with friend yesterday and she refused to admit she needs anything. We have enough groceries and will just make a care package for her. Before this virus we would get together every two weeks- I would give her gas money, purchase her lunch and make sure she had food to take home. Last month we gave her a gift card to Plubix and will probably do this monthly. We are not rich but Blessed and believe in helping others. Today more than ever we need to check on people and help if possible. Southern Bee

If her house is paid for, she should look into a reverse mortgage. That would give her additional income.

If we get one it is going into savings, when DH retires in May, it will take a month for both Social Security and his pension to show up, so it will be very helpful

....they still have needs---prescriptions , food (some are paying for food delivery services because of compromised immune systems), they still have bills to pay -electric, phone, rent or mortgage--and everything keeps going up in price....I know many that work part time just because either their or their spouse's medication is so expensive....and their part-time jobs have been discontinued...

Why would college students need it...they can go back home and live with their parents and sit on their ass and be on their phones and play video games....(Im being sarcastic!)

That is what I am hearing too. To me that means folks who are on SS, SSI, SSDI who do not file taxes will not get any $$$.

I think I did hear, that folks who receive SNAP will get a temporary increase in their benefits.

I guess we will find out sometime this a.m.

People will have to file a tax return to get this benefit check, otherwise you will not receive one.

The wording right now says if you file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 you qualify for a stimulus check.

$1200 for a single person making under $75,000 or $2400 for married couple filing joint return making $150,000 or less.

They still need to figure what they are going to do with self-employed people.

To me the only people should get a check are those that are not working?

A lot of people still working are going to receive this check? Why?

My 90 year old MIL won't get one since she does not make enough money to file a return. She lives on SS.

The Stimulus should be there to help the people not big business. It's taxpayer money. They already had huge tax cuts & don't need a dime of help. Why are we bailing out big business while little business is suppose to get a loan in able to keep going? Something wrong with that picture if you ask me.

No reason for our government to be spending trillions of dollars on this???

Here is at least a general idea of what the stimulus checks might amount to and it conforms to what I've seen reported elsewhere.....

<<The stimulus check amount would be determined by your 2018 income tax return (or in some special cases, your 2019 tax return). Anyone who earned less than $75,000 (or less than $150,000 in the case of a joint return) in 2018 could get a check of up to $1,200—though as mentioned above, very low earners would receive smaller amounts.>>
