Foodnetwork program changes

Where did all the cooking shows go? Now I have time to watch Ina Garten, Giada and that cute Chinese/Jewish percussionist chef, and they've nowhere to be found. What gives? I hate food contests...pointless!

@bachspal I like to watch the real cooking shows as well. A whole day of Diners Drive-Ins and Dives or Guy's Grocery Games? I don't think so! I also don't get the Cooking Channel.

@traveler Some of those are on Sunday morning on the Food Network. Ina seems to be on Saturday. Don’t know if they are new or old.

Real cooking shows are still found on PBS, but mainly on weekends. However, the PBS Create channel has many cooking shows airing every day, all day. It's not the only type of programming they have, but I'd estimate it's about half. Check to see if your local PBS station carries PBS Create; it would be on a digital subchannel.

Where have you been???? The Food Network has turned into Chopped, Diners, Drive-In and Dives or contests....a cooking show is RARE these days....you can find a FEW EARLY Saturday morning or on Sunday...Try the Create Network for real cooking shows...

@bachspal: Where have you been? Food Network changed their programming several years ago. Which is why I very seldom watch anymore. You're right, it's a series of food wars, contests and food challenges for the most part. I watch Trisha Yearwood's show and a fairly new program called Delicious Miss Brown. I enjoy their shows because they actually cook!

For some reason it all seems to be about Guy & his shows. He must really be loved bby the network or pays to push his shows.

I watch Trisha, Ree, and sometimes one or two others, but that is all for me now....Food Network is not what it used to be.

I think because there is such a wide variety of cooking shows on other networks, on YouTube and other websites now, they had no choice but to promote, and air the programming that garners the most viewers. It seems to me that the "appetites" of their audience has evolved.

Several of your favorite chefs now offer paid cooking classes as well. I tune in to Guys Grocery Games on occasion, and like the cooking shows on Create TV- no frills, just cooking!

I record them (Giada Entertains, The Kitchen, The Pioneer Woman, Trisha's Southern Kitchen, 30 Minute Meals) so I don't miss them

Its the Philosophy of who runs the network---Kathy Finch who oversees programming for HGTV and The Food Network.....Here's what she has to say--

“Our job is not to teach people how to cook. Our job is to make people want to watch television. What we need to do at Food Network at night and prime is entertain people. That’s why we have competition shows. We have shows that have a big payoff at the end because you’re not gonna necessarily watch somebody cook a meal after you’ve eaten your own meal. We sort of have a big entertainment focus at night on Food Network. But then, during the day, and on Cooking Channel, it’s a little bit more instructional. It’s Ina Garten, it’s Ree Drummond. But at Food Network, it is more about entertainment. ”

And then she totally disregards what even her daughters and friends say about the cooking shows---

“I have three young daughters in their 20s. More and more, when I meet their friends, what they will say to me is, Oh, my god. I learned how to cook by watching the Food Network. That’s a really nice thing to feel like we’ve done. That’s never been our goal, but when you look out at the generation of young people that learned how to cook, learned how to enjoy food, maybe wanna be a chef, it’s really inspiring, and I think that’s one of the things that makes us feel really good at Food Network.”

So even though the demographic that advertisers CRAVE love the cooking shows, she ignores them....Things that make you go hmmmmmmm...SMH!!

Most of tv is unwatchable. The news programs are the new entertainment.They try to SHOCK us every day.

I'm still waiting for Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson to reappear as tv hosts. I miss those real entertainers: Frank Sinatra and his ratpack, comics,dancers, singers, etc. I sit with the remote changing channel continuously - especially when most of the program is commercials, station breaks, previews of other show, weather, etc.

You can see reruns of the old Johnny Carson shows on Antenna TV check their website to see if its available in your area....
