Feeling sad

I am so sad. My grandson is a Senior and is missing the last months of his senior year. I don't blame anyone but China, but this is so distressing. To maybe not watch him walk across to get his diploma...........

He has worked so hard and is heading for university in August (hopefully). I wonder if they will be able to have graduation the end of May and then the party later. These kids are missing so much. My heart hurts for these kids and our whole country which has almost come to a standstill.

I also have two weddings for another grandson and granddaughter later this summer, which means showers, too. So sad..........I just keep praying............

My nephew will not be able to receive his diploma at a formal graduation ceremony at his university. I have also placed blame for this situation at the source of the cause. We are at war, and I will fight the enemy.

My oldest GS graduates from college in June. The diplomas will be snail mailed to each grad.

Graduation initially was going to be streamed. That was scrubbed out quickly. Believe it or not, the students said "no way" we're not showing up! Now all that is moot.

No one in my immediate family is distressed from not "seeing him walk across" to get his diploma. His parents will be happy to see him waking across the den from the mailbox virus free. Better safe than sorry down the line.

It is sad. We are all with you in being disappointed about so many plans seemingly disappearing suddenly out of nowhere. Some of it will come back. Just not right now. But you know that.

My take is that this period is going to be an important memory for all of us and it will be a good one if we can look back and be proud of how we adapted and were kind to each other and had a good, if quiet, time in spite of circumstances.

You know how sometimes you had a big vacation planned as a kid and it rained the whole time? And you spent it doing something else and it turned out to be fun in its own way. And it's a memory now that you would never have expected. These times can create surprisingly good memories too.

@deepwaterdotter I agree.......we are at war and with an enemy we can't see or hear. We just know it's out there, but we don't know where.

The source? I've been there and have seen their habits first hand. Very haphazard and uncaring w/their hygiene.

I feel that the young people are pretty resilient, they probably won't miss walking across that stage very much. It's most likely bothering you more than him. We all are "missing out" on something but things will get better, it will all be okay and as others have stated,

we'll look back at this and we will have learned something from it.

Not to mention the financial ruin many will experience from being put out of work.

Just last night, DH mentioned that graduation ceremonies have been canceled at all of our state's universities, and the kids are probably happy to be excused from having to go.

Parents are the ones who enjoy the occasions most, maybe because it proves their tuition dollars have finally paid off. Of course, they're proud of the kids, too.

Many students think the ceremonies are boring and would prefer to be somewhere else engaging in more "festive" celebrations..

I know neither of my sons thought their grad ceremonies were anything more than just another place that they were required to show up. Our older son's was held in baking hot sun in a huge university football stadium, while students were draped in hot graduation robes..

Younger son wasn't impressed with his, either. He was just happy to be finished with school and couldn't wait to meet up with his friends after the ceremony, when the real fun could begin.

I'm sure they will look on this type of event quite differently now that they are adults.

This is a distressing time for everyone.

I feel so badly for many right now. My heart goes out to the smaller children missing school, birthday paries, playing with their friends, and organized sports.

The older high school children, especially seniors, missing parties, prom, graduation festivities, and sports seasons cancelled for those looking for college scholarships.

For those cancelling celebrations, especially weddings, it is so hard.

There is a plethora of others who are truly suffering through this so it is no wonder so many are sad or depressed.

We will get through this, that is the good news. Maybe we could do something positive during this time so when things are back to whatever normal they will be, we came away with something more than we had before this started. Perhaps it will be helping others, donating, learning a new language, completing projects long overlooked...whatever your "positive" might be.

This is not for ever right now life is looking pretty grim, but this will end eventually. I come from a generation where no one went to graduation both my HS and College graduation were scarcely attended

@Porcelain @I hope you are right.I am feeling really upset that we can't visit my mom in a nursing home,our son in another state or even go to the grocery store without pause for concern.I have hopes that we will all survive...but that is not how I planned to spend 2020 at home trying to stay alive. I am mad at China.

Xenophobia is ugly pointless stupid and reduces your immunity by revving up your anger instead of staying calm. Americans are giving this to each other now. You are one step away from hating your next door neighbor and having them hate you. If we want to look at other people as threats then we are all threats to each other. What an ugly way to use one's precious time and immunity. I am not here for it.

@dex I'm mad at China, too. They knew this and tried to hide it. They have no concern for human life.

My cousin's son was a H.S. senior in Wilmington NC during Florence and missed three months of his Senior Year. Per FB he still got to do some amazing things with his classmates (many marching band practices, etc). In the end, he had made memories and they are just as special.

But dang @Porcelain ::::stompin feet::::can't I at least continue to despise my next door neighbor?!?? I mean really, with all my soul?!? It's the only "joy" they give me!
