I just did the census online. Took me less than three minutes. Easy as pie. I couldn't find the first letter mailed to me with instructions but I did have the second letter mailed to me that has a log in code. This was all I needed. Just went to site on the second letter. Everything is self explanatory except one question. This question asks for race, but then asks one to add in country "from." I just put American. Another suggested choice was German, for example. This question could have been clearer. Good luck.

I responded to that question with my main three "ethnicities". I was told the survey would take ten minutes but it wasn't bad at all.

I did mine last week.

It was easy-peasy.

It took all of five minutes to do, and I answered every question.

I did the paper copy.

On that question my first impulse was to write American, but decided (guessed) they wanted the heritage. Both parents families came through Ellis Island, and I entered the country their families came from.

I want really sure how I was supposed to respond to this question. I just put American. I didnt know how far back in time I was expected to go with regards to ancestry. I'm also not completely sure where ancestors came from, including ancient ancestors.

@Mindy D , didn't consider going any further back than where my ancestors entering via Ellis Island were coming from.

Decided they're not looking for my genetic makeup, but rather immigration pattern....sort of....

Wish their intent had been clear.

I was puzzled by that as well ... so I left it blank and went about my business. thought it was going to be more intrusive.

This question will be useless to them because there are many ways to interpret it and many people do not know their true ancestry or their familiy's immigration history. People are often wrong about where they think their family is from.

When you do it online, if there are questions you do not choose to answer will it let you continue on, or error out?

Both my parents were adopted out of foster homes In the 1930's. They both landed up in Nebraska.
Our heritage is unknown. We are Americans, and we don't know who are real ancestors are.

No difficult questions. I answered my ethics as Scotch Irish, they really don't care where your from. It was easy and nothing you should be afraid to answer.

it will take you back again if you choose not to answer but you could write in choose not to answer

My DH just read article that said safe way to respond is to do it online, the one in the mail may be be a scam, said scammers on to it like crazy for the mail ins.

I filled it out and there were a couple things I quesitoned. 1 With all of the LGBTQ issues I was suprised that Male and Female were the only options 2. two of my children are hispanic and that is not considered a Race for the survey. I find that crazy because that is a huge population in the US.

That question could have something to do with minority funding. That's my hunch. @x Hedge
