Depositing checks online

I use my bank online but it does not allow the deposit of checks. I had a check to deposit and my husband was going to go to the bank drive through. I stopped him and I went to my online account and found out I must download their app to photo deposit a check. I've avoided their app. I don't trust app security very much but went ahead and added the app so I could deposit the check. It was easy except that the instructions for writing where the deposit should go showed up after I wrote my acc# and the words "For deposit only" on the back. Then I added the words the bank instructed. I hope they take the deposit. The instructions should have been on the first screen BEFORE I started my deposit. Oh well, just glad for online services in this crisis.

I've been doing this for a while now. As long as the endorsement says For Deposit only to ABC Bank, you should be OK. You will get a notification if it's not accepted.

In fact, I need to transfer some funds to another bank soon and I'll either write myself a check and mobile deposit or see if I can Venmo the $$ to the other account.

I wrote this but I also wrote another "For deposit only" into xxxx bank with acc#xxxxx too. Just hope it goes through.

I have used my credit union’s phone app for 90% of my banking for years and I love it. I edeposit checks using the app. No problems.

Not sure if they email but you might want to check the app to see if they left a message there and to verify the amount was deposited for you.

I don’t get an email. The E deposit shows up on the deposit list immediately. And within a couple of minutes when I log out and log back in again the amount is credited into my account. The only time there’s been a delay in seeing the actual check amount in my account is sometimes on a holiday or a Sunday night. It’s never been longer than next day.

@Mindy D I just did the same. I checked online to see if the deposits went through and it looks like all of them did. I’m not keen on using the phone app and like the chitchat with the teller, but under these circumstances I went with the app. I must say it was easy.

Sometimes I feel like even though I’m in my early 50s, I must be part millennial. If I can conduct a transaction online or on my phone or using some sort of technology as opposed to person to person I will choose that every time over in person.😂

I always sign out of any financial apps when I'm done. I won't keep them open. I have a Schwans app as well that I don't stay signed into, don't need my info compromised.

I was recently a victim of fraud. I mailed a check to my nephew, his roommate took it, used correction tape, wrote his name in and used automated deposit to put it in his account. I obtained a copy of the check and you could tell from the copy that correction tape had been used. Obviously, not all banks audit these types of deposits. My bank required that I make a police report and reimbursed me for the amount of the check. I had to get rid of my checks, get new checks but my credit card and ATM card were not impacted. I do not have automated banking, do it the old fashioned way.

A few years ago DH & I we're victims of identity theft. It was a mess. We were advised to never bank or pay our bills online.It May be the old fashioned way of doing things but I really don't care.I feel safer,period.

I do not pay bills by mail unless forced to! The only trouble I’ve ever had in my life paying bills has been through the US mail because they got lost.

I'm going to avoid going to the bank and mail any paper checks for deposit to my bank. Postage is cheaper than gas and I don't want to be out and about.

I know you are right about this possibility. This will probably be my only time I have to deposit a check this way. I will probably delete the app as soon as I see where we stand with the virus. I do use the online bank to see my accounts. There is only one device that is used to do this and if the IP address changes the bank won't let anyone use it. The device stays inside my home. When I recently changed internet providers I had to do a ton of things to prove it was me.

I'm not using it on a phone I take with me. It's only on my iPad. The bank has my device number and my ip. If either changes they make you jump through hops verifying it's really you. I just had to go this when I changed my internet provider. I wouldn't put the app on my phone. I will also probably delete the app after I see what needs I'll have during the outbreak. Apps are way too hackable. The online banking I use let's me do everything the app does except deposit checks....which is stupid. They can add check deposit to the online account banking. I'd never bank online using a Microsoft computer.
